Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part V

We're entering the final week of the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids project, but that doesn't mean that our conversation about healthy eating stops here. Healthy Eating is a long-time endeavor for the entire family. I hope you've enjoyed exchanging ideas with fellow moms and dads about tips to foster healthy eating habits for young kids.
As we discussed earlier, one of the major challenges parents face is to come up with new healthy recipes. Why don't help each other out by swapping favorite recipes for snacks and meals? Here's my son's favorite snack. And it's easy to make.
Mixed Fruits Yogurt
1. Cut kiwi fruit, banana, strawberry and peach (or your kid's favorite fruits) into tiny cubes;
2. Mix them up;
3. Pour vanilla or original flavored yogurt over the mix and stir;
4. Ready to serve!
Do you think you kid will love it too? Feel free to share your or your kid's favorite recipes. I'd love to try them out.
Don't forget to visit the Eating Right Kids website for daily menu recommendations and expert advice on healthy eating.

Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part IV

Do you take your kids to grocery shopping? I do and I've seen a lot of moms do during my regular visits to supermarkets. Have you ever thought about making a trip to the grocery store a fun and educational experience for your kids? The Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids program encourages us to discuss about an interesting topic, one that I haven't given much thought to before.
Question of the Week: How do you navigate the grocery store with your kids?
We always start with the fresh produce section, picking fresh fruits and vegetables. My son often leaves with a big apple in hand. Our second stop is either the bakery or the cereal/breakfast section. Baby food and snacks come next. Not surprisingly, they are my son's favorite parts of the store and where we stay the longest. I love to check for new flavors and new varieties. We then get milk, yogurt and eggs from the diary section. We usually conclude our trip at the natural/organic products counter. I'm trying to integrate more green food into our diet.
Although I haven't made a conscious effort to teach my child about healthy eating through grocery shopping, the way we navigate the store is quite consistent with what I believe to be a healthy living style. Again, I'd suggest leading by example as a great way to encourage kids to eat healthy foods.
Feel free to share you grocery shopping stories here and grab your final extra entry for the big Looney Tunes gift basket giveaway!
Meanwhile, don't forget to send your questions about nutrition to Momlogic’s nutrition expert, Haylie Pomroy. She can be reached at eatingright@wb.com.

Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part III

Does healthy eating imply less tasty food? Certainly not! As the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids program shows, food and beverages can be delicious and nutritious at the same time. You may read my earlier posts here and here to learn more about this great program. I believe that if we consciously and consistently expose our children to healthy food and snacks, they will soon discover the truth that healthy by no means equates nasty. On the contrary, a lot of all natural or organic food tastes distinguishably superior to processed food.
This week, our discussion will center around the following topic.
Question of the Week: How do you ensure that your child eats healthy at school, daycare, or whenever you're not with him or her? What are some of your kids' favorite snacks?
Whenever I'm not with my child, I will pack fruit cups and yogurt to take with him. I will also provide clear instructions for the caregiver as to how often and how much he can eat those snacks. Yogurt is my son's number one favorite. He also loves fruits (esp. apple, banana, kiwi fruit, and water melon), cheerios, bread sticks, and granola bars.
Are you ready to share your tips for healthy eating when your child is in the care of someone else? Remember: by weighing in each week's discussion, you will be entered to win a big basket filled with Looney Tunes gifts!

Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part II: Giveaway!

~~The giveaway is now CLOSED~~
Let's continue last week's discussion of the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids program and healthy eating. We've been so concerned about the quality and nutritious value of kids food products partly because of the persisting severity of child obesity, which may put a child's health and self-esteem at risk.According to a 2009 study, almost 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese, meaning more than half a million 4-year-olds! The number of overweight and obese children (10 to 17 years old) is at or above 30 percent in 30 states. Warner Bros. Consumer Products' and Safeway's Eating Right Kids initiative was actually highlighted by the Federal Trade Commission for its ability to have a positive impact on childhood obesity. Kudos to the program!While the Eating Right Kids page on Momlogic provides us with expert opinions on healthy eating habits, I'd love to gather some tips and ideas from moms and dads like you. You could win an awesome Looney Tunes gift basket by sharing your thoughts.
Question of the Week: How do you teach your kids about healthy eating choices? What works best for your family?
I stubbornly believe in the power of "leading by example". Kids love imitating adults in all aspects. If we as parents consciously make healthy eating choices, our kids will follow the lead and develop healthy eating habits as well. My son is particularly good at picking up my hints. When I drink water, he turns to his bottle. When I eat fruit, he asks for what I'm having. When I show him how happy I become after eating a lot of vegetables, he wants to take more of them too. This will sure benefit the entire family if everyone is trying to eat healthy foods.
Now I can't wait to learn about your secret ingredients to healthy eating! Meanwhile, feel free to email your questions to eatingright@wb.com and nutritionist Haylie Pomroy will answer them on the Eating Right blog.

Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Food Review

I introduced to you earlier about Eating Right Kids products newly launched by Safeway and Warner Bros. Consumer Products. Did you have a chance to try them? Luckily, Team Mom sent me a cute Eating Right Kids lunch bag for review and I'd love to share my experience with you.
A few recaps of what makes this new product line unique. The Eating Right Kids line features beloved Looney Tunes characters and over 60 items across 18 categories including breakfast foods, produce, portable meals, dairy, snacks, beverages and frozen entrees. The food and beverages are not only tasty, but nutritious, formulated to standards based on the most recent dietary recommendations and regulations from several federal and state agencies.
Eating Right Kids is an offshoot of Safeway's Eating Right line for adults, which we buy quite often, especially the salad and cereals. Warner Bros. has in fact taken the extra step of clearing retail shelves of the Looney Tunes themed foods that fail to meet a "better-for-you" standard. The new line is sold exclusively at more than 1700 Safeway locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Inside the lunch tote featuring Bugs Bunny, we found a canned pasta (Whole Wheat Macaroni & Beef in Tomato Sauce), a mixed fruit cup, a Milk Chocolate Coating Chewy Bar, and a bottle of 100% apple juice. Overall, we like the mix of products and the colorful packaging. My favorite is the chewy bar. It's very delicious and provides a good source of calcium and fiber. I like the microwaveable packing of the pasta. It's convenient to use and has the right portion size for kids. But I do think the flavor we tried is a bit too strong and salty by my standards. Remember that I have a strong preference for low-sodium food.
If you're on the lookout for easy to make snacks and meals for your kids, the Eating Right Kids line is definitely worth trying because besides its convenience features, it unites great taste and nutrition. And the Looney Tunes characters will certainly add fun to kids mealtime.
Thanks a lot to Team Mom for this great review opportunity!

Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part I

Warner Bros. Consumer Products has teamed up with Safeway to create the Eating Right Kids Food Line featuring Looney Tunes characters. For the first time ever, such well-known Looney Tunes characters as Bugs Bunny, Tweety, Taz, Wile E. Coyote, and Daffy Duck, serve as mother’s helpers to find nutritious food and beverage items for their kids that taste great. The new line consists of 60 items across 18 categories including breakfast foods, produce, portable meals, dairy, snacks, beverages and frozen entrees. It is available at more than 1700 Safeway locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.
The Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program is being featured on Momlogic.com, along with an Eating Right blog from nutritionist Haylie Pomroy, who offers healthy recipes, expert tips and Looney Tunes Eating Right product recommendations to help moms save prep time when creating healthy menus and school lunches.
As a mom advocate for the Eating Right Kids initiative, I would like to invite you to join in the conversation about healthy eating habits. We'll have a different topic each week for five consecutive weeks. By weighing in each weak, you will be entered to win a gift basket filled with $100 worth of Looney Tunes themed products (more details to follow)!
Question of the Week: What personal challenges do you face daily to make sure your family is eating healthy?
For me, the biggest challenge is to introduce more variety into a healthy diet. By variety, I mean both different types of food and different ways to cook the same food. Unlike many kids who refuse to try new food, my son loves novelty and shows great enthusiasm for something new. But the problem is that he loses interest in the "new" food fairly quickly and keeps asking for a change. I often find myself out of ideas of what to cook for him. Meanwhile, I'm reluctant to expose him to the fancy world of junk food.
It's also quite a challenge to unite flavor with nutrition. I've been trying hard to maintain a low-sugar and low-sodium diet for my family. But the food I cook sometimes turned out to be too bland in taste. While flavor doesn't have to come in conflict with nutrition, I'm concerned that flavorful food tend to have more salt, sugar or other ingredients that might pose health hazard in the long run.
I look forward to reading about your personal challenges and how you cope with them.
Haylie Pomroy is currently taking reader questions about nutrition. Please feel free to email your questions to eatingright@wb.com by Sept 14th.
