Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part II: Giveaway!

~~The giveaway is now CLOSED~~
Let's continue last week's discussion of the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids program and healthy eating. We've been so concerned about the quality and nutritious value of kids food products partly because of the persisting severity of child obesity, which may put a child's health and self-esteem at risk.According to a 2009 study, almost 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese, meaning more than half a million 4-year-olds! The number of overweight and obese children (10 to 17 years old) is at or above 30 percent in 30 states. Warner Bros. Consumer Products' and Safeway's Eating Right Kids initiative was actually highlighted by the Federal Trade Commission for its ability to have a positive impact on childhood obesity. Kudos to the program!

While the Eating Right Kids page on Momlogic provides us with expert opinions on healthy eating habits, I'd love to gather some tips and ideas from moms and dads like you. You could win an awesome Looney Tunes gift basket by sharing your thoughts.

Question of the Week: How do you teach your kids about healthy eating choices? What works best for your family?

I stubbornly believe in the power of "leading by example". Kids love imitating adults in all aspects. If we as parents consciously make healthy eating choices, our kids will follow the lead and develop healthy eating habits as well. My son is particularly good at picking up my hints. When I drink water, he turns to his bottle. When I eat fruit, he asks for what I'm having. When I show him how happy I become after eating a lot of vegetables, he wants to take more of them too. This will sure benefit the entire family if everyone is trying to eat healthy foods.

Now I can't wait to learn about your secret ingredients to healthy eating! Meanwhile, feel free to email your questions to eatingright@wb.com and nutritionist Haylie Pomroy will answer them on the Eating Right blog.

When at the grocery store I give the kids a few choices of a new food to try. They pick the food and are usually more willing to try it since it was their choice.

I make sure to eat lots of fruits and veggies. I am really into eating my salad meals to cut down on carbs right now...so when my grandson sees me eating healthy he wants to join in so I give him a bowl and a fork! He thinks it's yummy! Also a great way to incorporate fruits is to always have cut up and on hand! that way they don't have to wait!

As my children get old enough to eat solid foods I have always given them fruits and vegetables as snacks.
Even my older children prefer to eat raw veggies with ranch dip or and apple with peanut butter and rsisins as a snack now.
To me the best advice is to teach them early.
Thank you so much for the chance to win.

I teach by example. Also, we try not to buy too much junk food so there's a limited amount of temptation.

I talk with my daughter about healthy choices all the time! I really try to model that behavior by eating healthy myself, and teaching her WHY it is important to stay healthy and eat right. It is all about balance!

I always offer fruits and vegetables as snacks and that gets extra services of these items in each day. I purchase whole grain items and use items like the Barilla Smart Taste pasta, that looks like regular pasta but has extra fiber and nutrients. I find that if it looks like the stuff kids are used to they will eat it.

I agree that leading by example is the best way to approach this situation. I do not eat chips or drink pop, we snack very sensibly in our house...when we snack. We have salad every single night with dinner and have a variety of 'good-for-you' toppings to choose from instead of adding dressing. My daughters eat well and both enjoy fruits and veggies. While they do get sugar snacks and juice at Mamaw's house, they know that those things are not for everyday eating and should be enjoyed only as a once-in-a-while treat.

I have a food chart that displays how many servings needed per day for specific age groups and we try to eat from different groups on the chart. I also like my kids to take even a teaspoon of veggies..even if they say they don't like them..taste buds change!!

We keep pretty much only healthy foods in our house, and we tell the kids what each type of food will help with (brain, strength, etc).
