My Review:

This Halloween is bound to be different for Elliott, who struggles to rein in his growing psychic power while embarking on a menacing mission to save both the magical and non-magical worlds from evil sorcerer Noir. It is paramount that he and his beloved teacher Mr. Moonbeam, leader of the chosen guardians for the non-magical world, retrieve the powerful Halloween Crystal from Noir before midnight on Halloween. The clock is ticking. Can they rise to the challenge?

Written in short chapters and accessible language, this book allows young readers to readily immerse themselves in a world full of magical elements, from spells, potions and crystals to witches, ghosts, and monsters. They learn about the importance of teamwork, discipline, courage and integrity along the way. 

The book's vivid and detailed descriptions make it easy to visualize what the characters are faced with and to empathize with them. Both members of the distinctive student-teacher duo are likable and relatable. I believe that's largely attributable to the author's real-life experience as an educator. I appreciate the time the story spends on revealing the teacher's inner thoughts. They help youngsters understand that even adults as capable and admirable as Mr. Moonbeam can have a hard time coping with the pressure exerted by a strong sense of urgency and responsibility.

Engaging and entertaining, Mr. Moonbeam and the Halloween Crystal makes a perfect read for kids as they eagerly count down to the spookiest day of the year.

The children are excited about their sleepover at Grandma's rustic mansion deep in the woods. There are so many fun foods to eat and fun things to do with Grandma. All is wonderful until the night falls. Strange sounds and suspicious shadows keep the kids wide awake. Luckily Grandma comes to their rescue and resolves the mystery.

Featuring numerous mythical and ghostly creatures in both its rhyming text and lively pictures, the book presents a mischievous but friendly side of what the children believe to be horrifying. A closer look at the creatures' facial expressions seems to suggest that no harm is meant to be done whether they exist in the real world or in someone's imagination. Grandma's explanation certainly helps ease the kids' mind and put them to sleep. Unveiling the possible sources of scary sounds and shadows may encourage young readers to be more adventurous and analytical. Moreover, they may get over their fear for the unknown and unfamiliar as they explore and investigate.

Benignly spooky and amusingly informative, it's the perfect bedtime story to read around Halloween!

My Review:

Adapted from the Tosi family's short film shot back in the fall of 2003, Squashed recreates a sweetly spooktacular story that starts with a suspense and ends with a smile.

A little girl is being teased by her brother and a friend of his, who accidentally get her favorite Teddy Bear stuck in a tree after throwing it around for fun. As he searches for a stick to rescue the toy, the brother stumbles upon a strange pumpkin with something moving inside. More intrigued than scared, he takes the pumpkin home and tries what he can to keep it warm and cozy. At midnight on Halloween, an uninvited guest comes to retrieve the pumpkin. What makes it so special? Will the kids get in trouble?

What makes this book unique is that its storytelling is accomplished primarily through visual presentation. The drawings employ various shades of yellow, orange, pink, green and brown as powerful tools of expression. The brighter colors offer a sense of comfort and warmth whereas the darker ones cast a shadow of mystery and uncertainty. The characters' expressive faces and gestures facilitate a better understanding of their feelings and personality. The minimal use of words encourages young readers to explore details in the pictures, and to retell the story with the addition of their own imagination and interpretation.

With positive messages about family, kindness, and empathy, the book makes a fantastic fall and Halloween themed read for both beginner and independent readers. After reading the book, you may also want to follow the link in the back to watch the original film featuring the adorable child versions of the author and her brother.

My Review:

As the latest addition to the Bobos Babes Adventures series, Bobos Babes Adventures: a Magical Halloween is an enchanting and entertaining read with a wonderful mix of magic, mystery, and kid-friendly humor. As excited about the Halloween as most kids are, the magical sisters, Angel Scarlett, Fairy Cora, and Princess Daphne, can't wait to dress themselves up and go trick-or-treating in the land of Harmony. The talented costume designer Gavin the Grasshopper has custom-made three unique masks for the young ladies, who have to wait until the right time to unbox their surprises. What makes those masks so special? Will all the girls enjoy their new costumes? How will their Halloween adventure turn out?

Featuring cleverly-written rhymes, colorful illustrations and adorable characters, the book is sure to fascinate young readers who love Halloween as an opportunity to get creative, get adventurous, and have lots of fun. The girls set great examples for following directions, and being honest and patient. As a result, they become their better selves with more courage and confidence. Their costume shopping experience demonstrates the proper manners for greeting people, making meaningful interaction, and showing genuine appreciation. My Review:

As a sequel to Matt Monroe and the Secret Society of Odontology, Matt Monroe and the Haunted House ties neatly back to what happened in the first book. The story is full of action and suspense, keeping the reader engaged and wanting more. The way the story is told is quite unique to me. Its change in time, location and character focus may seem a bit chaotic at first, but everything comes seamlessly together as the story evolves. The characters are well-developed with distinctive personalities and dynamic elements that add color and life to the story.

While the book appeals to fantasy lovers with its exciting story about magic, super powers, the battle between good and evil, and so on, I love that it also touches upon a lot of real-world issues that are easy to relate to, including teamwork, friendship, family relationship, and bullying in the school setting. This book definitely makes me want to read the first book in the series as well. I'm sure any young reader with a brave heart and curious mind would love to read both books right around Halloween!

Synopsis
