My Review:

As the first book in the middle-grade series Felix & Ninja: Adventures in Tub, Zombie Zoo presents a spooky, suspenseful and spellbinding story about friendship, courage, collaboration and creative problem-solving.

Felix and Ninja are two teenage loners in a run-down orphanage on the island of Tub. As a naturalist, Felix enjoys taking meticulous notes of his observations and detecting patterns. Ninja is a sharp, agile and vigilant girl good at acting on instinct and in stealth mode. The emergence of suspicious substances like glowing green goo and glowing green mist brings the two together in a high-risk investigation and a daunting mission to save the orphans and their townsfolk from a hive-mind zombie outbreak.

Fast-paced and action-packed, the novel keeps readers on the edge of their seats as they wonder what Felix and Ninja would encounter or discover next. Its delectable blend of mystery, fantasy, adventure, kid-friendly humor and horror attracts a wide range of book lovers across different age groups. While it's fairly easy for readers to detect the resemblance between Mom and Mrs. Gourd, the little ones in the story find Mrs. Gourd to be a completely different person. It is through the eyes of a young child that we see both the frustration and creativity of a loving mom.

Built on a situation that seems incredibly familiar to young readers as well as their parents, the story speaks to every family that has experienced bedtime challenges. As they giggle through the pages, young readers may realize what they can do to help make mom's life easier. Their moms and dads, on the other hand, may be inspired to get creative about searching for the bedtime routine that works best.

But why is she missing those meows so much?

Narrated by Phoebe and addressed to the cat, this book in fact features an ode to a cat by a pug. Through the pug's observation, readers get to learn about how the dog and the cat differ in their behavior and personalities, and how they interact with each other in funny but adorable ways. The growing bonds between the two strongly suggest the possibility of true friendship between individuals with substantial differences. Being different can be fun and exciting.

While the earnest tone of the pug adds to the humor of the narrative, the lively, cartoonish drawings that accompany the poem make the characters all the more lovely, charming and amusing. Their vivid facial expressions and body language can keep the readers laughing from beginning to end.

My Review:

With her favorite shirt on and all her project supplies packed, Alycat can't wait to share with everyone her Magical Volcano Explosion on Science Fair Day. Her excitement gets dampened however, when she finds out that Lucy is not only wearing the same shirt (in a different color) but also doing the same project (with a different name). Her anxiety about winning the competition gets heightened as she fails to find the most important ingredient of her experiment from her box of supplies. To her surprise and embarrassment, Lucy comes to her rescue. Could Alycat be wrong about the copycat situation all along?

Written with humor and gripping plot twists, the book keeps young readers engaged as they follow Alycat's dramatic mood changes triggered by various unexpected events. They may identify with Alycat as someone who strives to be unique and original in every aspect of life. Using the composition of oxygen as an analogy, the story makes the point that being similar doesn't have to be a bad thing and that two same things may work wonder when they join forces. Don't overlook the possibility of great minds thinking alike. It's important to make the distinction between coincidence and plagiarism. Alycat's experience also warns us against jumping to conclusions based on assumptions.

Each character in the story has something great to teach us. Spotty sets an example of a true friend, who keeps cheering up Alycat by encouraging her to focus on the positive side of things. Lucy generously offers to help Alycat, despite the fact that Alycat views her as an annoying copycat and a major opponent in the competition. The bright-colored pictures and the cheerful characters wearing confident smiles combine to make the unusual situation in the story look more funny than scary. Alycat's bizarre yet entertaining experience suggests that a positive mindset, coupled with solid support from friends and family, could help ease fear, confusion, and uncertainty caused by abrupt changes. Just as Alycat's classmate Roux points out, trying things differently can be fun sometimes. The book also includes a list of practical tips for feeling better on a bad day, written with amusing cat humor.
