Guest Post & Giveaway: ¡Vamos a hablar Español! 3 Secrets to Learning Spanish

Are you interested in learning Spanish? Would you like your kid to be bilingual or multi-lingual? Today I have a special guest post written by Chris Kober, an Oxford graduate and a professional Spanish teacher. He will be revealing to us 3 secrets to learning Spanish and sponsoring a giveaway of a premium membership to his popular site Spanish Word A Day, along with his ebooks!

Dear friends,

I was absolutely delighted when icefairy asked me to share my secrets about learning Spanish with her blog readers. You see, I admit that nothing in life worth having comes without effort... It's true! Unfortunately, there are no shortcuts to learning Spanish. BUT, you can greatly improve your learning in the long term by using the effective methods I have developed for my own Spanish Word-a-Day program.

My experience has taught me that if you want to learn Spanish, the method you chose to learn it is as important as your own determination to learn it. Most importantly, it has to include the following three ingredients for success:

1) It has to be quick – while it should be part of your daily life, it should not take more than a few minutes of your time! We all have busy lives!

2) Memorable - Context, context, and context! The Spanish you learn has to be REALLY useful! Too often the standard textbook materials do not qualify as REALLY interesting.

3) Fun – believe it or not, there is no bigger motivator than FUN ;) From the moment I started teaching, I have always ensured that there is a FUN element to engage the attention of my students, like “What’s today’s Spanish joke?”, “Did you see the picture of Chris in Spain?”, or “Guess what ‘Dude’ means in Spanish slang!”.

Thanks to these ingredients, Spanish Word-a-Day has become one of the most effective tools to learn Spanish. For the last five years, I have helped thousands of Spanish learners from all around the world to improve their Spanish. The result: More than 26,000 people have joined and the number is growing every day.

Let me share with you some really tasty Spanish, the kind of Spanish I want my students to learn:

If you're invited for a lovely dinner and want to express how much you are enjoying the food, then you can always use the standard phrase everybody learns from the books: ‘¡Qué delicioso!’ But wouldn’t it be really impressive, if you could surprise your hosts with a phrase that most natives use, but foreigners hardly ever learn during courses? Here is a phrase you can use to show your real appreciation:

La paella está como Dios manda - ¡Qué deliciosa! / The paella is just how it should be - it's delicious! [Literally: The paella is how God commands it - it's delicious!]

And how about being able to say that you have a hangover? Would you have known that you will wake up the next day with a ‘resaca’ – a hangover (in Spain), or ‘la cruda’ (in Mexico)? In Venezuela you will have ‘el ratón en tu cabeza’, which literally means ‘the mouse in your head’. That’s where Spanish Word-a-Day brings in the real personal touch. Because wherever you are in the world, you can say:

Tengo una resaca brutal - I have a major hangover [Literally: I have a brutal hangover.], and you will be understood for drinking bloody Marys for breakfast! :-)
For years now, I have used the Spanish Word-a-Day to teach the kind of Spanish that is always useful, at every level of proficiency. It doesn’t matter whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced.

How should you use Spanish Word-a-Day?
The Spanish Word-a-Day program gives you all the tools you need to learn Spanish. You will find that your level of commitment determines the amount of time that you spend on it. You can choose to receive the basic Spanish Word-a-Day as an email. This is a great start for those who just want to give it a try. As you continue learning Spanish you will find that the more you surround yourself with Spanish phrases on a daily basis, the faster you will learn. Recently Spanish Word-a-Day has also started a Facebook page and a Twitter channel. If you are ready to learn more and to take your Spanish to a higher level, you can join the premium service to enjoy the many great extra features like additional audio, business Spanish, Mexican and Spanish slang, translated jokes and much more!

I hope these insights will help you like so many others to get a deep insight into the Spanish Language. If you have questions or suggestions, please send me an email. I am always happy to hear from you!

Happy learning!
Saludos from Spain,
Chris
Spanish Teacher and creator of the Spanish Word-a-Day Program

ToiletTree Fogless Shower Mirror Review and Giveaway

~~The giveaway is now CLOSED~~
It's nice to have cleansing, exfoliating and shaving all done in the shower, but it had been virtually impossible until I was given the opportunity to try out ToiletTree Fogless Shower Mirror, as a member of the Family Review Network. We have a really big bathroom vanity mirror, which occupies almost the entire wall  above the counter. But it's a bit too far from the bathtub and always gets extremely foggy when the hot shower is on. We have to wait a while for the fog to disappear or to wipe it off with a clean towel before we can use the mirror to do anything about our face or hair.

ToiletTree Fogless Shower Mirror offers an easy solution to that common problem, with its innovative, patent-pending design. First of all, I like that it's stylish and lightweight. It weighs less than 1 pound! Second, I like the ease with which to mount it to the wall. The package comes with a double sided tape and removable silicone adhesive, all that is necessary to install the the bracket that supports the mirror. Third, it's very easy to use. Simply fill the mirror’s reservoir with hot water from your shower head, and you'll be able to enjoy a truly fogless mirror while in shower. The hot water in the reservoir neutralizes the mirror and air temperature to eliminate fogging. After use, just empty the reservoir of water and you're done. The mirror is designed to be detachable to make water filling and emptying more convenient.

But that's not all that The Fogless Shower Mirror has to offer. The mirror also comes with an adjustable frame to accommodate different users. My husband is much taller than me and thus needs a quite different angle to look in the mirror with comfort. The convenience shelf on the mirror bracket is great for placing small objects like your razor or tweezers. A squeegee is provided to wipe away water drops. You may have a better idea of how the mirror works by watching the video below.

After trying it ourselves, we have a strong feeling that the mirror was clearly designed with the needs of its user in mind. What a smart invention! It's available for purchase at Amazon for $29.95 (33% off list price). ToiletTree Fogless Shower Mirror is designed to remain fogless and maintenance-free for a lifetime. You can take advantage of the company's 30-day, risk-free trial offer and receive a full refund if you are not completely satisfied with your purchase. If you've been wishing for a reliable and affordable fogless shower mirror, this would be it!

Know Where Your Kids Are with SecuraTrac GPS

Child safety is one of the most discussed topics during back-to-school season. Every 40 seconds someone’s son or daughter is reported missing, totaling over 800,000 missing children in the United States each year. Parents are concerned about how to keep track of their children while they are out of sight and what steps to take to help shorten the time it takes to locate a missing child.

Have you seen the movie "Taken" (2008) starring Liam Neeson? Kim, daughter in the story was lucky to be found by his superhero dad. But not many parents are former CIA agents. In reality however, we could possibly track our child internationally with the help of a reliable amber alert gps tool.

I was recently introduced to SecuraTrac, a CA-based company specializing in gps tracking devices. Their flagship product is a compact, portable personal automated locator called SecuraPAL. Its slick design allows SecuraPAL to easily fit into a child's pocket or backpack. Using the global positioning system satellites and the mobile phone networks, it can accurately report your child's location to the SecuraTrac network, through which you will be notified of your child's current location at regular intervals.

You can communicate with your SecuraPAL anytime via your cell phone or a secure personalized website. You can also configure your own SecuraFences, per-determined boundaries for your child's movement. The SecuraPAL proactively and automatically alerts you whenever your child goes beyond those SecuraFences.

SecuraPAL is a great child safety and amber alert gps tool  for keeping track of the ones you love. This small, lightweight gps tracking device can be purchased from SecuraTrac website at $129.99 each with a 2-year contract. If you feel the price is a bit beyond your current budget or you'd like to test drive SecuraPAL before you buy, you may choose the option to rent the device at $9.99 per day. You will only be billed for the days in use. The rental rate already includes two-way shipping and handling.

Wish everyone a happy and safe new school year!

GPS Tracking for family

Dean's Pretzel Dips Cheesy Friday Giveaway: Week Two

~~Week Two's Giveaway is CLOSED. Comments are open until 9/10~~
Welcome to Cheesy Friday Week Two! Did you look for Dean's Pretzel Dips on your last grocery shopping trip? Did you have a chance to try them? Well, I finally did! And as expected, I love the cheesy creamy Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Dip better while my husband prefers the sweet and tangy Honey Mustard Dip. And our son judged both to be equally yummy. See? That's how my cute boy holds our family together when mom and dad's opinions are divided.

I love browsing Dean's Dip website, because it not only provides detailed ingredients and nutrition facts for each product, but also suggests a good number of fun and delicious recipes. These recipe ideas have inspired me to use Dean's Dips more creatively.

Here's my favorite recipe featuring Dean's Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Dip:
Cheesy Layered Dip

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 10

Ingredients:

* 1 pound ground beef
* 1 (1-ounce) packet taco seasoning mix
* 1 (16-ounce) can refried beans
* 1 (12-ounce) tub Dean’s Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Dip
* 1 cup shredded lettuce
* ½ cup sour cream
* ½ cup salsa
* Choice of pretzels, tortilla chips, crackers, vegetables, pita chips or bagel chips for dipping

Directions:
1. Prepare ground beef and taco seasoning mix according to instructions on taco seasoning packet.
2. Spread refried beans on bottom of 10-inch glass pie plate or similar serving dish. Top with cooked taco-seasoned ground beef. Stir Dean’s Cheddar Cheese Pretzel Dip and spoon over the top of the ground beef. Use back of spoon to spread Dip over beef almost to the edges (some of the beef will show). Mound lettuce in center of cheese layer. Top with sour cream and salsa. Serve immediately with choice of dippers.

It's fast and easy to cook. Love it! Now it's your turn to tell me which Dean's Dip recipe is your favorite and enter to win this week's prize.

A little heads up for next week's Grand Prize giveaway: you will need to provide your original recipe using Dean's Dips to enter. Extra credits will be awarded to blog posts, pictures and videos. So you may want to start thinking about it now.

The Giveaway

For the second weekly giveaway, Dean's Dip has generously offered to give one of my lucky readers a Dean's Pretzel Dip Prize Pack, including a coupon good for a free full-size Dean's Pretzel Dip in any flavor, Chips Clips and a Reisenthel Mini Maxi Carryall Bag (as pictured above)! Again, entering this week's giveaway will also make you eligible to win the Grand Prize as described here. Plus, you'll be able to claim extra entries for next week's giveaway.

Five Simple Things You Can Do to Keep Your Child's Smiles Healthy and Bright

What can be more precious than your child's happy, healthy smile? But it is no easy task to keep that healthy smile for life. Tooth decay, as the most common chronic childhood disease, has posed a real threat to children's oral health. Studies have shown that each year, more than 51 million school hours are lost as a result of problems related to tooth decay and that tooth decay affects approximately half of all second graders and nearly 80 percent of 17-year-olds!

As a parent, you need to know the importance of caring for your child's oral health and to take active steps to help her establish good oral care habits in order to reduce the risk of oral diseases. Trident and TwitterMoms have teamed up for a new blogging program about oral care for kids. Share five simple things you can do for your child to keep their smiles healthy and bright on your blog.  The first 100 qualified participants will get a $25 Target gift card and one random qualifying participant will win a grand prize of $100 Target gift card!

Clinical studies have shown that chewing sugar free gum, like Trident®, for 20 minutes after a meal helps fight cavities. Xylitol, a sugar free sweetener in Trident, has been shown to loosen plaque. I didn't know these until I read them on TwitterMoms. Trident® has also partnered with Smiles Across America® to help underprivileged children get the dental care they need. More information about Trident and Smiles Across America can be found at the end of this post.

Here are the top five simple things I do to help my child take care of his teeth:
1. No candies before bed.
    This is a rule that has been strictly enforced in our house. Candies are one of the major culprits for tooth decay. The hours when a child is asleep is the best time for germs and bacteria to feast and thrive. To convince my son of the harmful effects, I show him board books with humorous illustrations about what the "bad guys" would do in his mouth if he eats a candy bar at night.

2. Choose low-sugar or sugar-free snacks.
    Sugary snacks, like candies, cookies and cakes, are popular among kids, but they are known to cause tooth decay, especially when eaten several times a day between meals. Many sugary foods are also rich in fat and likely to cause child obesity. So it's really important for parents to choose healthy snacks that are nutritious and not loaded with sugar. Low-sugar, low-fat snack choices include fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread and crackers, and  low or non-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese. These snacks are tasty, filling, but less harmful to our teeth.

3. Brush teeth at least twice a day. Brush together with your kid to increase her interest and to show her the right way to brush.
    Parents are their child's initial role models. Children love to imitate adult behavior. Children are more likely to get excited about brushing their teeth if they see their parents do the same. It was when he saw me brushing my teeth in the bathroom that my son first showed interest in brushing his own. I love the picture of us brushing our teeth side by side in front of our big vanity mirror. It has been recommended that children brush at least twice a day for two or three minutes each time. The most effective way to help establish healthy brushing habits is to brush together with your child every time you ask her to follow the routine. It's also a good time to demonstrate the right way to brush.

4. Play the "Whose teeth are whiter?" game with your kid to encourage her to take good care of her teeth.
    The game is real simple. Stand side by side with your kid in front of a mirror, and make a big grin showing your teeth after counting 1-2-3. Whoever gets the whiter teeth and nicer smile wins. Just a fun way to remind your kid to take good care of her teeth. It's likely to work better for younger kids than older ones.

5. Replace toothbrushes at least every 3 months.
    Oral care professionals recommend that we change our toothbrushes at least every three months because studies have shown that after three months of normal wear and tear, toothbrushes become much less effective at cleaning your teeth or gum. Old toothbrushes also tend to harbor a lot of germs and bacteria. Changing toothbrushes often and choosing fun-looking ones can also increase your child's interest in brushing. There are quite a few kid toothbrushes with cute, colorful designs on the market, so you're good to go.

Do you have any tips for taking caring of your child's oral health? Feel free to share with us in a comment or a blog post.

My Purple Toes Book Review

Purple is one of my favorite colors, but I've never painted my nails or toes purple. Neither have I ever imagined the possibility of a man wearing that bold color on his toes. But Blair Hahn, a well-established lawyer and father of two children, did paint his toes purple after he joined his daughter at the nail salon for a pedicure. And this unique experience inspired him to write his first book My Purple Toes, an interesting board book written for children between the ages of one and five.

As my son fits perfectly in the age group the book is targeting, Family Review Network and My Purple Toes invited us to review this book together. It was a sweet surprise that the book arrived beautifully wrapped in purple tissues. Illustrated by artist Tate Nation, the book is filled with rich colors, likable characters, and funny pictures, all of which grabbed my son's attention in no time and prompted him to start reading it. The book has the right size for a toddler and it's really easy for little fingers to flip through. Its board style also makes the book more durable for young kids.

Based on a real life story, the book tells about a father's life with purple painted toenails. The first half of the book shows how everyone in the family, from mom to the kids to their dog, reacts so differently to dad's unconventional new look. Mom can't believe what has happened. Sister is amused. Brother feels embarrassed. And the dog no longer recognizes its master. Dad's purple toes are seen in a variety of locations and seasonal settings in the latter half of the book. The story is told in simple and similarly structured sentences that are easy for young children to follow and remember.

One interactive feature of the book is that a cute frog with purple toes hides on each page and children can have lots of fun looking for this naughty green friend. My son likes to point at different objects in the pictures and ask what they are. I'll throw the question back at him and let him reveal the answer. That's our favorite way to explore a new book.

After reading the book, I realized that the story is trying to convey a message: be yourself and enjoy life. The author intends to teach children about the importance of acceptance, enjoying life and being different. But I think that's a good lesson for adults as well. I was impressed by how more opened-minded my child is than myself. He got really excited at the sight of the big purple toes on the middle page of the book. Here's a "recording" of our conversation about that page:

Son: Look mom, big toes! [Giggles] Many big toes!
Me: What color are they?
Son: Purple.
Me: Do you like purple toes?
Son: Yes, they are pretty.
Me: Do you want daddy to have purple toes?
Son: [Looks at my toes, then his, and nods] Yes. I want to have purple toes too. I want mommy to have purple toes too. [Sings purple toes repeatedly in the tune of "Brother John"]

I consider myself a rather receptive person, but I can hardly bear the thought of my husband having purple painted toes.

My Purple Toes can be purchased online for $10.99. A significant portion of its proceeds will benefit children in the United States and around the world through nonprofit, Soles4Souls, which collects and distributes shoes at no cost to people in need.

Win A Free Weekend Stay at Hampton Hotel

This is a Sponsored Post written by me on behalf of Hampton Hotels. All opinions are 100% mine.

Have you entered the Hampton Chain of Friends Sweepstakes I told you about back in July? If not, you'd better hurry up because the deadline to enter is fast approaching. Please keep in mind that you can enter once per day for your chance to win 1 of 100 daily prizes--8 Be My Guest Certificates, each valid for a one-night stay at any Hampton Hotel worldwide!

There two ways to enter the daily drawings:
  • Book a stay online at a Hampton hotel by September 5, 2010 with the promotion code "FRIEND" or "COF." and you will automatically be entered into a drawing based on the day the stay was booked.
  • Enter online without making a purchase by filling out the entry form linked above.
Click Here
I've been entering daily using the free entry method in hopes of winning a free weekend stay for our next vacation.

My husband and I both love traveling and we've visited quite a few interesting places in the company of our best friends, who are also a couple and live across the street. Besides the opportunity to hang out and have fun together, traveling with a couple good friends has some real benefits. For instance, you can save on car rental and gas by driving one car. You can drive longer distances a day with more alternate drivers available. You don't have to rely on passers-by to have a nice family picture taken. You are open to more ideas and possible activities.

If I won the daily giveaway, I would invite our best friends to join us for a trip to Denver, Colorado. None of us has ever been there, so it will be an exciting adventure for every one. I would probably choose to stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Downtown. It's 100% non-smoking and well-equipped. It offers complimentary breakfast and beverage, a large business center, a fitness room, swimming pools, and even cribs and high chairs for kids. Sounds fabulous, doesn't it?

Now I need to go enter for today and wish all of us good luck!
