My Review:
Full of surprises and miracles, The Cobbler's Bridge crafts an insightful and meaningful tale that explores the Christmas spirit in depth while exhibiting the profound power of kindness and forgiveness.
The wealthy Wolftown and the poverty-stricken Lambville are divided by a wide and shallow river. As the only cobblers in the area, Little Tom and his grandfather are the only Lambians allowed to rent a shop in Wolftown, but they have to cross the river barefoot during their daily commute. Their workload peaks in the months before Christmas. Wanting to surprise Tom with a special Christmas present, the old cobbler stays overnight in the shop to work on the first-ever pair of shoes for a Lambian. Tom gets home alone, only to find an angry mob in hooded robes shouting and cursing in his front yard, leaving behind a burning cross. Something miraculous follows. The young cobbler decides to regift his precious new shoes on Christmas, which turns out to be the best one ever for people on both sides of the river.
Using the river to symbolize the social divide between the rich and the poor, the author draws us inside a fictional world that in many ways resembles the real world we live in - one with inequality, injustice, prejudice and discrimination. The harsh realities of the deeply divided society however, are contrasted by the heartwarming relationship between Little Tom and his grandfather, who love and care for each other, who are skillful and hardworking, and who stay positive despite the unfair treatment they receive. It's ironic for the best cobblers in town to possess no shoes of their own. Yet, they never complain.
The most surprising and touching part of the story is that Little Tom chooses to return kindness for hostility. It takes great courage and generosity to make such a noble decision. As soon as they realize that the cross is magic, the cobbler duo start to share the food it provides with others. Tom goes further to express his gratitude to the mayor of Wolftown by giving him his shiny new shoes along with a heartfelt letter. Sharing and giving back are perfect ways to spread the Christmas spirit!
Tom's friendly gesture prompts the mayor to reaccess his past behavior and have a bridge built to bring the divided people together. By indicating that kindness and forgiveness have the power to transform conflicts into connections, the story stimulates young readers to take the initiative to facilitate conversation, communication and cooperation between different social groups. A brave first move may lead to positive riffle effects.
The turn of events in the narrative is artfully represented in the book's realistic and evocative illustrations. Through contrasting combinations of gloomy and delightful hues, the pictures allow readers to go through changes in atmopshere, emotions and surroundings alongside the characters. They also reflect the close connections between the two cobblers by showing the ways they interact and spend time together.
Captivating and uplifting, The Cobbler's Bridge makes a worthy addition to any child's library. While a happy ending is not always possible in reality, the story gives us hope and motivates us to act.
