My Review:

Fast-paced and captivating, Bubba and Squirt's City of Bones follows the title characters' page-turning adventure in Paris, France. Bubba and Squirt's father goes missing while performing at a magic show in Japan. Following hints dropped by their great-great-grandpa in Bubba's dream, the brother-and-sister duo starts their search and rescue mission in the City of Bones, known as Catacombs, an ancient underground cemetery in Paris. In the company of their new French friends, they get to explore the city, uncover the art thieves' stash of stolen artwork, and make a narrow escape from murderous mythical creatures. Will they succeed in finding their dad and getting him home safe?

Written in simple yet vivid language and short chapters, the book does a marvelous job of drawing young readers in from the very beginning. Each chapter ends at the perfect moment that keeps curious minds wondering what will happen next. The storytelling is so smooth and engaging that readers feel as if they were experiencing the suspenseful quest right next to the characters.

Adopting first person narration alternating between Bubba and Squirt, the story allows us to understand the characters better not only from their own points of view but also through the eyes of each other. Bubba is funny, peppy and adventurous while Squirt is more cautious, considerate, and rational. They care about each other and complement each other, which makes them a great team.

Bubba and Squirt's eventful tour also gives us the opportunity to learn about various landmarks in Paris, useful expressions in French, as well as world famous artists and their masterpieces. For those who are interested in French history and culture, the book thoughtfully includes additional background information, a glossary of French words, and a crepe recipe.

With a brilliant blend of fantasy, mystery, and thriller, the book will appeal to anyone who enjoys reading about magic, myths, exotic trips, and supernatural beings.
