My Review:

Short and sweet with nothing spooky, The Monsters of Marymount Mansion is a captivating and thought-provoking illustrated chapter book about courage, diversity and acceptance. The 150-year-old Marymount Mansion has a secret: its owner has been hosting a bunch of monsters in the basement. Eight-year-old Toby is one of them. Not a fan of confined space though, he takes every opportunity to sneak out and explore the outside world. All goes well until he gets cornered by a threatening teenager expressing disgust for the way he looks. Will Toby conquer his fear and continue his adventure?

With simple language and smooth storytelling, the author makes this novel highly accessible to children who are transitioning from picture books to chapter books. As they follow Toby's exciting escapades, young readers learn to see things from a fresh perspective, to empathize with the loveable characters, and to celebrate the differences that make our world more colorful and interesting. They may come to the realization that monsters, other than their appearances, share a lot in common with humans, such as family traditions, sibling relations, and holiday celebrations. The funny and animated illustrations help reinforce such messages while making the monster figures all the more adorable.

Everyone is unique in some way, so it's easy for readers to identify with Toby and understand his fear of being picked on and ill-treated. Assuring us that it's okay to be different, Toby's story also inspires us to challenge the status quo, to step outside our comfort zone and to try something new. On the other hand, it reminds us to be kind and more open-minded to those who don't or are not willing to "blend in." Bullies, as Toby's experience suggests, are far scarier than monsters.

Entertaining and uplifting, the book makes the perfect holiday season read that little ones wouldn't want to put down!
