My Review:
A funny and fast-paced middle grade mystery, The Book Bandit follows eight-year-old Phoebe and her bestie Luana as they go on a serious search for a lost book that carries special meaning for their common friend Becky. As the daughter of a real police chief and an avid Nancy Drew fan, Phoebe prides herself on being an efficient and competent young detective who knows exactly how a proper investigation should be conducted. But as the duo gets closer to the truth, their list of suspects keeps growing. How will they connect the dots to make sense of all the information they have gathered and pinpoint the real book bandit?
With lively, youthful conversations and playful pictures, the book presents a cast of characters who are relatable, realistic and very different from one another in terms of personality, interest and family background. Phoebe is sharp, forthright and aggressive while Luana is calm, sensible and tactful. The two make a perfect pair when it comes to interviewing potential suspects and piecing together clues. Luana helps Phoebe stay focused and refrain from rushing to a conclusion without solid proof.
While the mystery is rather limited in its scale and severity, the investigative process Phoebe follows is applicable to cases of a much greater magnitude. By attempting to crack the case together with Phoebe, young readers may sharpen their analytical, logical reasoning, and problem-solving skills.
Cleverly weaving themes of friendship, teamwork and kindness into an engrossing mystery, this book excels in both entertainment and educational values. Hope the next book in the Phoebe Chen series will come out soon!
