My Review

I Am the Shark impresses me as an intriguing and highly informative read. With the word "great" in his name, the Great White Shark is eager to establish himself as the greatest shark in the sea. His claim, however, is constantly challenged by other sharks in the book, including the biggest, the oldest, the fastest, the smartest, the sneakiest and even the smallest. Feeling a bit frustrated, he begins to cast doubt on his ability to live up to his name. Luckily, it doesn't take long for him to figure out what truly makes him the greatest shark of all!

With a balanced combination of the silly stuff and the serious stuff, the book teaches about tons of shark facts in the most fun way possible. By following the Great White Shark's adventure under the sea, young readers are introduced to a wide variety of sharks and learn about what makes each of them special. The colorful and playful illustrations help put a face to the name and make the traits of each character more vivid and memorable. My kids and I have all learned something we didn't know about sharks before reading this book.

Besides its scientific side, the book offers valuable life lessons through the Great White Shark's search for self-worth. It promotes positive thinking, persistence, kindness, and good sportsmanship. It encourages the reader to feel good about being the way they are as well as to strive to be the very best.

Interestingly, the book ends with the guest appearance of a funny, clueless character that might appear in the author's next book. It also kindly provides safety precautions about a shark encounter, and additional books and resources for really dedicated shark lovers.
