My Review

Life in the ocean may not be as romantic and carefree as suggested by many animal fantasies. Told alternately from the perspectives of two young orca whales Vega and Deneb, the story in A Whale of the Wild focuses on their family's struggle for survival. While desperately searching for salmon, their primary source of food that becomes harder to find due to global warming and massive commercial fishing, the sister and brother duo have to overcome the sorrowful loss of their baby sister caused by pollution, the turmoil and danger posed by earthquake and tsunami, and the separation from the rest of their family.

The story is heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time. Powered by the trust of her younger brother and the knowledge passed down from the older generations, Vega is finally able to conquer her lack of confidence and to assume her role as the Wayfinder for the pod. The interaction between Vega and Deneb is truly touching and filled with love. Meanwhile, the book urges the reader to take seriously the impact of human behavior, such as whale hunting, boating, excessive fishing, and pollution, on the well-being of wildlife. It also promotes human efforts that aim for conservation.

The book is so skillfully written that it can easily evoke intense feelings of the reader, as he or she closely follows the eventful journey of the main characters. The story also provides a good opportunity to learn about what a wild orca's life is like in reality, including social structure, differences among groups, features of habitats and more. Quite a few fun facts about orca can be found at the end of the book. If you are interested in whales, sibling love, family bonds, self discovery and environmental protection, A Whale of the Wild is a book that you don't want to miss.
