Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids Program Part II: Giveaway!

~~The giveaway is now CLOSED~~
Let's continue last week's discussion of the Looney Tunes Eating Right Kids program and healthy eating. We've been so concerned about the quality and nutritious value of kids food products partly because of the persisting severity of child obesity, which may put a child's health and self-esteem at risk.According to a 2009 study, almost 1 in 5 American 4-year-olds is obese, meaning more than half a million 4-year-olds! The number of overweight and obese children (10 to 17 years old) is at or above 30 percent in 30 states. Warner Bros. Consumer Products' and Safeway's Eating Right Kids initiative was actually highlighted by the Federal Trade Commission for its ability to have a positive impact on childhood obesity. Kudos to the program!

While the Eating Right Kids page on Momlogic provides us with expert opinions on healthy eating habits, I'd love to gather some tips and ideas from moms and dads like you. You could win an awesome Looney Tunes gift basket by sharing your thoughts.

Question of the Week: How do you teach your kids about healthy eating choices? What works best for your family?

I stubbornly believe in the power of "leading by example". Kids love imitating adults in all aspects. If we as parents consciously make healthy eating choices, our kids will follow the lead and develop healthy eating habits as well. My son is particularly good at picking up my hints. When I drink water, he turns to his bottle. When I eat fruit, he asks for what I'm having. When I show him how happy I become after eating a lot of vegetables, he wants to take more of them too. This will sure benefit the entire family if everyone is trying to eat healthy foods.

Now I can't wait to learn about your secret ingredients to healthy eating! Meanwhile, feel free to email your questions to eatingright@wb.com and nutritionist Haylie Pomroy will answer them on the Eating Right blog.

  1. I try to incorporate a vegetable and a fruit w/every meal. I teach my son that what you put in your body is what fuels it. If you put in junk, you'll get junk. Plus, soda is bad for your teeth.

  4. I serve a vegeatable and fruit with both lunch and dinner (dinner, now that they're all in school). I also do not allow sugary snacks or sodas (except special occasions) We have 4 kids, so they eat what I serve or they go hungry. I am not a short order cook. Also, we do NOT eat any fast food-maybe 6x a year. Thanks for the giveaway.

  5. Question from last week-The only challenge I have getting our children to eat healthy is breakfast. If they don't like what cereal is in the house, they just will not eat and wait until lunch. Not good as we all know how important breakfast is. Thanks!

I serve, and eat, the proper portions of each food group, I try not to eat too much junk, although once in a while I will have a dessert or snack that I really shouldn't have. 119. Well, I try hard to eat well in front of the kids (they're 3 and 5), and we talk about how some foods are better for your body than others, but having treats sometimes is ok too, and how too much of any one food might not be good for your tummy - even the healthy ones. (Ever seen a toddler's #2 after Grampa gave her FOUR corn on the cobs?!?) I try to preach - and practice - moderation, basically.

  136. We lead by example. If we want our children to eat right, we have to eat right. So even if we don't want to eat those green veggies, we do, just to show our kids that they should too.

  139. I try to teach my kids by example. If we have something that they think they don't like I will make them try it. If they still don't like it then at least they tried it. I do try to make them eat some sort of healthy food and we drink a lot of water with our meals.

  146. I think the biggest way to teach my kiddos is by example. If I make good choice and eat healthy food, they are more likely to do so as well. I also try and give them variety and allow them to choose between two healthy options!

  149. I make sure my kids eat healthy all the time, we incorporate a lot of vegetables and fruit into out diet, as well as we try to eat whole wheat products 90% of the time, i also like cooking grilled foods instead of fried ones, but if i am to fry our food then i make use of healthy oils as well to cook them :)

  157. I agree with your comment about leading by example. My kids learn their habits from me! I try to instill healthy habits from the start...we start with vegetables and fruits when they first start solid foods (none of that rice cereal). I also serve a couple of veggies at every meal and always have salad as an option. Finally, we have a huge garden every summer. I really think my kids have learned to love produce because they have been such a big part of growing it!

  158. I try to limit the junk food in our home. My 7 & 9 year old daughters would rather eat sweets and whatnot rather than fruits and veggies but if there are no sweets in the house then they have to eat fruits & veggies. Plus I try to set an example by choosing healthy foods myself.

  162. I agree that "eating by example" is the best way to teach. We also require at least two bites of everything on the plate before you are allowed to leave the table. This helps them get over hang-ups like not eating because they don't like the "look" of the food.

Thank you for hosting this give-away!

  163. How do you teach your kids about healthy eating choices? What works best for your family? I have taught her to eat the colors of the rainbow. We go to the produce section and she brings along a picture of a rainbow she colored. She then gets to pick her fruits and veggies trying to get a fruit and or veggie for each color. We are vegetarian, so the produce section is where we purchase most of our food. The on to soy, legumes etc.

  165. I must say that I haven't really thought about teaching my kids to eat right. They certainly get their share of chicken nuggets, but I try to make sure their favorite fruits or vegetables are on the table, too. I also have been trying to use more whole wheat flour in my baking - not a big thing, but small directions towards more healthy choices.

  184. My only challenge was choosing new and different recipes. My kids love to eat and I never had a problem. I went shopping and used coupons, giving them a coupon or 2 of the good cereal and they picked it out. This way I was giving them what I wanted to eat but let them think they had a choice. Always worked and shopping was always enjoyable
    Thanks
