Send a Digital Flower via the Flowerling App and Have a Real Tree Planted

Flowers make a wonderful gift for almost any occasion - holidays, birthday, anniversary, graduation, housewarming, Get Well Soon, Thank You, Be My Valentine...just to name a few. But unfortunately they can't be a gift that will last. No matter how much care you give to a beautiful bouquet you receive, it is bound to wither and die in a matter of days. I hate to see those expensive flowers going into trash. It's really wasteful, especially when you take into account the layers of elegant wrapping paper used for presentation, oversized boxes used for delivery and all the carbon footprints associated with packaging, delivery and disposal. To my delight, a new mobile app called Flowerling offers a more socially responsible and eco-friendly way to buy and send flowers. Isn't it cool to send a digital flower in this digital age? Better yet, for each virtual flower sent, a REAL tree will get planted!

The Flowerling app is free to download in iTunes app store and works on both iPhone and iPad. The first time you open the app, you will be prompted to create an account, which is also free and only asks for your name and email. Ready to buy some flowers from the Flowerling store? You will need to purchase coins, with a price range from 99 cents for 5 coins to $9.99 for 55. The coins never expire.

The Flowerling store offers a wide variety of flowers, bouquets and vases starting at 3 coins each. You can browse all the available items by category, or simply type in what you'd like using the search function on the upper right corner of your screen. You can pick your favorite flowers and assemble them into a bouquet. I find the pre-made bouquets to be a more economical option as each costs up to 10 coins (which amounts to just $1.99). That's way much cheaper than sending real followers and there's no need to deal with stinky water ever!

By default, all your purchases will be stored in your greenhouse. You can discover more things to do with each item when you click on it.

Like real flowers, your flowerling ages over time, with a lifespan of 8 days. You can extend that for several days by watering your flowerling or buying food for it. You also have the option to send it to a loved one or compost it. For me, it was fun to water the flowers and see the green bar (which indicates its life span) grow.

Moby: A Cool New Way to Stay Connected w/ Family & Friends!

I'm very excited to be introduced to a new iPhone app called Moby, which allows me to keep track of the exact locations of my family members and friends without having to call or text them.

The Moby app is completely FREE and very easy to use. Family members can securely and privately share their current location with one another by sending a check-in or requesting a check-in. You have full control over whom you want to share your location with and for how long.

After downing the free app onto your iPhone or iPad, you need to register for an account with name, email and phone number, and then add friends from your iPhone contact list. Once you see yourself along with your current location on the Moby map, you can start a sharing session with your chosen friend for a specified time, send a check-in without starting a sharing session, or send an alert. I love that you have the option to send a message along with your check-in. So you can let your friend know not only where you are but also what you are doing. Moby works best if all your contacts have the app installed on their iPhone, but anyone can benefit from it as long as you have the app on your device and the others have access to email. You can share your location instantly with anyone who can receive messages from you via email. You can always invite your family members and friends to join Moby so that they can share their locations with you when needed.

The Moby app is so much fun to use and makes locating my family and friends a lot easier. I've recommended it to every friend of mine who uses an iPhone and I would like you to give it a try as well. The Android version of the app is set to launch in late August or early September, including the ability to share locations between iPhone and Android devices. Keeping Kids Busy on Summer Road Trips with Free MobiStories

As a road trip warrior, I've got some great game and gadget options that'll keep kids of varying ages entertained as you traverse the highways and byways of our glorious country. So what's the secret behind a smooth summer road trip with your family? Here's our Fave Five:

1. Nintendo DSi XL - We received a complimentary DSi XL to review when it was first released this spring and my kids have been fighting over it ever since it arrived on our doorstep. So what's so great about about the DSi XL? Well, the screen is way bigger than the traditional DSi, there's also built-in educational software including Dr Kawashima's Brain Training: Arts Edition and a comprehensive dictionary - which my husband loves since he's a walking thesaurus - but more on him later. There's even an option to create your own digital short movies complete with audio...I've even created a few Peanuts movies of my own since I'm proficient at stick figures, Snoopy and Woodstock. As with the Lite, XL owners are also able to download games through the Nintendo DSi Shop and create and share photos - which my kids happen to love!!! Of course, there are also plenty of game options - including the brand new Mario Party 8 for DS , Atari Sandlot Sluggers, Style Savvy and one of my personal faves - Scribblenauts!

A DVD Double Feature - Turn your laptop into a movie screen or better yet, pick up an inexpensive DVD player you can strap to the back of your seat so that your kids can catch their favorite movies - incidentally, "Alice in Wonderland" was just released this week on DVD and in my house, "The Tooth Fairy" is a current must-see (at least a dozen times or more). And hopefully, if you're not driving, you can grab a seat in the middle, whip out a bag of popcorn and watch right along with them. Another option, take the quiet time to read on your Kindle, iPad or crack open a good book...now that's a novel idea!

4. Mad Libs - If your kids are proficient at potty words (ie. poop, fart, etc), they will have an absolute blast filling in the blanks to the age old road trip conversation starter - Mad Libs. We actually gave these out at my daughter's birthday party and they have taken up permanent residence in our car. Funny, but when I used to play with Mad Libs way back when, I thought my stories were hilarious too.

5. The License Plate Math Game - I have to give credit to my husband on this one. Whenever we're in the car, he will encourage the kids to add the numbers in a license plate and whoever gets the answer quicker, wins the points. They do the same thing with the alphabet - they look for every letter in the alphabet and call it out as a car is whizzing by. Obviously, the driver should not participate in this game, but my hubby can't help himself - he's very competitive.
