My Review:

Brimming with love and kindness, How to Make a Sandwich tells a cozy and sweet story about food, family, friendship and forgiveness. Feeling hungry, Rae invites her cat Nero to watch her make a turkey sandwich while passionately explaining why making a sandwich reminds her of families. Her creation can't go exactly as planned though, with the key ingredients missing one after another. Can she solve the mystery? Will she finish making her sandwich anyway?

Through interesting monologues and vivid illustrations, the story brings to life a cute little girl and her adorable furry friends. Rae tries to act and talk like a grown-up, but the oversized lab coat she wears and the step stool she has to stand on to reach the kitchen counter give her away. Her cat Nero is a patient, attentive listener, while her dog Phebe is an avid yet mischievous food lover.

The analogy Rae makes between family and sandwich is clever and creative, suggesting the different roles family members play and how love holds them together. The way Rae handles the challenge of making a sandwich with limited resources inspires young readers to be flexible, to improvise, to make do with what you have, and to solve problems in constructive ways. Moreover, the ending of the story illustrates the joy of sharing and forgiving.

As an integral part of the book, the engaging and expressive artwork provides revealing details about each character and encourages young readers to observe and search for clues that help unravel the puzzle of missing ingredients. It also makes the loving relationship between Rae and her family members evident and compelling.

The conversations between Miranda and her friends demonstrate how to ask for help politely and how to be kind, supportive and generous to someone in need of help. Miranda's laudable determination inspires youngsters to work hard toward their goal, to overcome obstacles in their way, and to never give up easily.

Featuring warm hues and expressive eyes, the playful illustrations enrich the story with cute-looking characters, beautiful natural landscapes, and delightful details not referenced in the text. My favorite is the ending scene in which Miranda treats all of her friends to freshly squeezed OJ under the starry sky, a happy face on everyone including Mrs. O'Tree. The picture glows with the joy of sharing and giving back.

My Review:

Bob the Banana Goes Bad is a short and sweet story featuring a good variety of food items inside Mr. Abbot's fridge, with Bernie the Bagel as the mayor. Bob the Banana panicks when he finds out that he is browning. He worries that he'll never get picked by Mr. Abbot. Everyone else in the fridge tries their best to cheer him up and convince him that his day will come eventually. But Bob grows impatient and upset as time goes by. The fridge door suddenly opens. Will Mr. Abbot spot Bob and put him to good use before he goes inedible?

The book appeals to young readers with its colorful, vivid illustrations and cute characters with alliterative names that are fun to read aloud and easy to remember. It does a wonderful job of introducing children to fruits and vegetables in different colors and shapes. It also suggests different ways to cook and eat healthy food. Its message about staying positive and not giving up hope easily is loud and clear. Meanwhile, it shows the charm of friendship and a supportive community. My little one did have a question about why the banana gets into the fridge in the first place, because we usually store bananas at room tempature. I think it's also important to point out the difference between a browning banana and a rotten banana, for the latter may not be safe to eat. Other than that, the book would make a nice addition to your child's summer reading list.
