Packed with quirky, otherworldly characters, vivid descriptions and amusingly animated illustrations, The Blobs impresses me as an exhilarating, hilarious middle-grade graphic novel series imparting meaningful messages about friendship, teamwork, courage and sacrifice.
In The Blobs: Volume One: Crash Land!, readers are introduced to five oddball Blobs, who share an escape pod heading to their new home on Planet Splotch. Their hope for a safe journey dims as a crash landing on a mysterious planet hurls them into the claws of woeful Glitchies and their vicious ruler, who has devised an evil plan for galaxy domination.
Book two sees the crew of misfit Blobs settling into their new home, unaware of the enraged, power-hungry king's determination to gather all the Doomsicles at all costs. Their new planet is under attack. The Blobs are ill-prepared and outnumbered. Should they surrender to stop things from getting worse?
The moment I showed the books to my kids, they got captivated by the colorful covers and were eager to dive in together. I heard them burst into laughter and discuss the plots with excitement. As soon as they finished reading the first two books in one sitting, they asked when the next book would come out. I felt happy for them as they were having so much screen-free fun.
Skillfully written and comically illustrated, this series of intergalactic adventure shows what true friendship entails, stressing that one doesn't have to be big to make a big difference. It inspires youngsters to rise to the occasion, resist the temptation of dark power, and dare to defend what they value most.
