My Review:

Written in simple words and musical rhymes, Being Middle explores the bittersweet experience of a middle child through a heartfelt conversation between mother and daughter.

A young girl complains about always being left out or skipped over because of being stuck in the middle, wishing to be older or younger like her sisters. In response, her mother gently yet firmly assures her about all the great things associated with the middle position.

As a mother of 3, I can easily relate to the story and the characters. It's totally understandable for the little girl to desire more attention from her parents and more autonomy for herself at the same time. Her mother helps her realize that being in the middle enables her to enjoy the best of both worlds. It's a strength rather than a disadvantage. My middle son, for example, is practically the liaison between his older and younger brothers, who are far apart in age with very different interests and personalities. As a result, he excels in his leadership and social skills, making everyone around him feel close and comfortable.

Told in a genuine and lighthearted tone, the story promotes positive thinking and empathy while validating the unique feelings and experiences of middle children. It encourages young readers to embrace their special identity (being middle or not) and get the most out of it. The key messages of the book are made more accessible and memorable through its expressive, humorous illustrations, which capture both the differences and similarities among the siblings. Love and happiness can be felt and seen on every page.

Heartful and delightful, Being Middle makes a sweet gift for a middle child as well as an entertaining read for everyone else.
