AboutThe Chosen:
The Chosen is a groundbreaking historical drama based on the life of Jesus (Jonathan Roumie, who was invited to the Vatican on two different occasions to speak to the Pope about his role as Jesus), seen through the eyes of those who knew him. Set against the backdrop of Roman oppression in first-century Israel, the seven-season show shares an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. Season four premieres in theaters February 1, 2024.
With over 200 million viewers, The Chosen is one of the most-watched shows in the world. The series is consistently a top performer across streaming platforms Amazon Prime, Peacock, and Netflix plus a top-rated broadcast weekly on The CW. What started as a crowd-funded project has now garnered over 770 million episode views and more than 12 million social media followers.
The Chosen is an independent production written, directed, and produced by Dallas Jenkins and distributed globally by Lionsgate.
My Review:
I had the opportunity to watch episodes 4-6 of Season 4 before they hit the theaters. The show impressed me as captivating and thought-provoking, with powerful messages about faith, justice, integrity and humanity. Jonathan has done a terrific job of portraying Jesus as a multifaceted, charismatic leader. Besides working wonders and delivering words of wisdom, he is caring, compassionate, patient, and humorous. While he's not fully understood by his followers, he remains determined and ready to sacrifice himself for the survival of his people.
Instead of presenting Jesus' twelve disciples as a monolithic group, the show sheds light on their individual traits, the friendships as well as the conflicts and disagreements among them. With a mixed picture of loyalty and betrayal, of ambition and confusion, and of joy and sorrow, it reveals the many challenges and temptations that foreshadow the fate of the characters.
If you are looking for a lively recount of the life story of Jesus along with the interactions between him and his followers, this show would be a top choice. I expect the viewing experience to be even more enjoyable on the big screen.
