My Review:
Set in the bleak winter days of small town Crabtree, The Body on the Beach is a suspenseful and thrilling murder mystery that follows the adventures of a pair of young detectives, 13-year-old Kat Dylan and 10-year-old Alec Dylan. Just as Kat is about to regret her decision to stay with Grandpa Nick for the boredom and uneventfulness of Crabtree, she receives a suspicious request to meet from her schoolmate Gabby, who irritates Kat by not wanting to be seen together and goes missing after being questioned by the police. Kat decides to meet with Gabby a second time, but only to find her dead body on the beach. The town may be short of financial resources, but it's certainly not short of secrets. Will team Dylan beat the grownups/professionals to uncover the truth without putting themselves in danger?
Chris Wieland once again proves to be a master of storytelling in this tantalizing sequel. Told in Kat's voice, the story keeps the readers engaged and entertained with humor, action and unpredictable twists and turns. The ending provides answers but in the meantime makes you want to read more about what could happen next.
While Kat remains the tough, sharp, and sensitive girl we know from book one, it's evident that she has grown both intellectually and emotionally. She's more sensible, more considerate, more cautious and less impulsive. Her interaction and teamwork with Alec add tremendous fun and charm to the story.
Alone and as part of the series, this book is one gripping and stimulating read that mystery lovers don't want to miss.

In this sequel to 2022’s The Crabtree Monsters, thirteen-year-old girl detective Kat Dylan and her little brother, Alec, are back!
Even after cracking the case of the century, Kat and Alec are still stuck in Crabtree, Michigan, and suffering through a long, cold Midwest winter. When Gabby, a middle school “mean girl,” approaches her with a problem, Kat can’t imagine it’s worth her time—or that there’s a chance Gabby’s problems will lead to the next big mystery. But when Gabby becomes the focus of the local police, especially Kat’s Grandpa Nick, her interest is piqued. Before Kat can get to the bottom of things, she finds Gabby lying dead on Crabtree’s frozen beach.
Suddenly, Kat is awash in questions. Who killed Gabby? Could Kat have saved her if she’d paid closer attention to the mean girl’s troubles? From there, Kat, with Alec in tow, sets out to find answers and bring the murderer to justice. Along the way, she learns that Gabby’s case is tied to another investigation: the kidnapping of a rich kid from Chicago whose family is intertwined with the people who own most of Crabtree.
As she and Alec dig, they find themselves at odds with kidnappers and killers, private eyes and cops, and more than a few kids and adults who would just like them to go away.
