My Review:

Maya's Tiny Warriors is an interesting and informative picture book about what goes on inside the human body when someone gets sick. Maya looks forward to her first day of school, but wakes up only to find herself feeling out of sorts and even losing appetite for her favorite food. It turns out that she's got a high fever and has to stay home and rest in bed. As the poor girl worries about not being able to get better, the tiny warriors in her body, also known as immune cells, are busy at war with the culprits causing her misery. Who will prevail?

By juxtaposing Maya's flu symptoms with her immune cells' actions, the book offers a fun and intuitive way to learn about how the immune system works inside one's body, along with the division of labor among different types of cells. The analogy between immune cells and warriors of an army in various capacities actively defending the body against intrusions and attacks is vivid and to the point. Scientific terms are highlighted in different colors to help young readers take note and keep in mind. The funny illustrations make the story more engaging and exciting as the readers root for the courageous and dutiful tiny warriors. Furthermore, knowledge about the immune system may boost a child's confidence in her ability to conquer an illness and get well.

Besides being a comfort read for an unwell child, this book may even pique your little one's interest in biology and medicine!
