It's great for kids to strive to become heroes who can save the world, but it's also important for them to realize that the world, more often than not, cannot be saved single-handedly. See synergy at work in New Zealand author Emma Pearl's new picture book Saving the Sun. Enter to win a hardcover copy as part of a bookish prize pack!
My Review:
Lyrical narration combined with gorgeous artwork makes Saving the Sun an enchanting and engaging read for those who love adventures in nature and those whose imagination knows no boundary. As a sequel to the author's well-acclaimed Mending the Moon, this book revolves around the same protagonists: Luna and her grandpa Poppa. The cross-generational duo embarks on a rescue mission after the sun sinks into the ocean and loses its flames. Their team keeps growing as they encounter various sea, land and flying animals and enlist their help. Together, will they figure out how to get the sun back to where it belongs?
Painted with vibrant, contrasting colors, the book brings to life a dazzling, dreamy world full of adorable, friendly creatures living in peace and harmony. When a challenge arises to threaten the welfare of the entire community, every member is ready to act, contribute, and cooperate. What happens in the story is suggestive of what we might do in reality to address a global crisis, such as pollution. It inspires young readers, our future leaders, to save the planet through coordinated efforts and creative problem-solving.
Besides the miraculous power of teamwork, the book also highlights the amazingly close bonds between Luna and her grandfather through the way they interact. While providing Luna with guidance and security, Poppa leaves her with ample space for growth, letting her explore and experiment with possible solutions, and gradually turn into a more independent thinker.
Delightful and heartwarming, this makes a terrific book choice for reading together with your little nature and animal lover.
About the Book:

After an especially sweltering day, the ocean sparkles and twinkles so invitingly that instead of slipping beneath the horizon, the sun plunges into the ocean itself.
When the sun sinks and loses its fire, Luna and Poppa’s yearly vacation on Summer Island suddenly goes dark. Luna knows the sun needs their help―the sky looks all wrong, and it’s neither day nor night! But it’s a big job to do all on their own.
To bring back daylight, they must think of creative solutions, seeking help from the local dolphins, monkeys, birds, and more. With the power of teamwork and imagination, can they find a way to return the sun to its rightful place, and set it ablaze once more?
This imaginative tale will enchant readers as Luna, Poppa, and their new friends of the sea, beach, and air rise to the challenge of fixing the sky once more and―literally―save the day.
