My Review:

Can You Spot the Leopard? An African Safari is a poetic and informative picture book that shares the beauty of nature and the wonders of wildlife. Written from the point of view of a passenger inside a safari jeep, the book documents in verse fascinating observations of wild animals in their natural habitats at different times of the day.

Through vibrant colors and realistic images, the illustrations artistically capture both the vitality and senerity of the natural world. While taking delight in such marvelous scenes as five ostriches runing in a line, a mother elephant showering her daughter with water and love, and carefree meerkats bathing in the sun, readers learn about how various wild animals go about their day, what they eat, where they rest, whether they prefer solitude or family life, and how they care for their young. They also get a glimpse of how a natural ecosystem works. The back of the book includes more detailed introductions about all the 30 animals that get featured in the poems.

This engaging and educational book is sure to charm young explorers and help nurture their love for nature.

About the Book:

Can You Spot the Leopard? is author/artist Karen B. Winnick’s newest picture book, an adventuresome African safari presented through poems and full-color paintings. Readers begin at sunrise, climbing into a jeep for a bumpy ride to view the wondrous animals as they would on a real safari. All the poems are based on real observations of what animals do in the wild, related in an accessible way. There’s even a sighting, finally, of the elusive leopard, before returning to safari camp under a starry night. At the back of the book, further information is related about each animal. A fun, informational, educational adventure to read and reread.

Ms. Winnick is an animal enthusiast, president of the Los Angeles Zoo Commission, and author of more than a dozen picture books, including Gemina: The Crooked-Neck Giraffe, How Lucky Got His Shoe, and Mr. Lincoln’s Whiskers.
