My Review:

Jolene: Adventures of a Junk Food Queen is a whimsical and educational picture book following a little girl's tremendous transformation from a Junk Food Queen to a Health Food Queen. Jolene is drawn to junk food so deeply that she eats it exclusively day and night, and wears it from head to toe. So does her only friend at school Sugar Sam. Jolene has no intention of changing until she drifts off to dreamland one night and starts a wacky and magical adventure there.

Jolene's story abounds in amusing and memorable characters, some representing her favorite junk food, and others embodying smarter food choices. Interestingly, it is the junk food characters who help Jolene realize the harms they could do to her teeth and her overall health. The colorful and energetic fruit and veggie characters, on the other hand, help debunk the myth that healthy food must be bland and boring. The creative, cartoon-like artwork adds great vitality and hilarity to the characters.

Although in reality, building a healthy, lifelong habit takes time and effort, Jolene's fun-filled adventure may get young readers interested in taking the initiative, while recognizing the helpful role of family and friends in making a positive change. It warns about the danger of excessive indulgence in junk food and suggests eating in moderation instead of complete abstinence, which might be less feasible for young children. More importantly, it offers a good number of healthy, nutritious alternatives that are visually appealing, delicious, and easy to prepare. The fun recipes in the back of the book, for instance, would be a sweet start!

The length of the book is closer to an illustrated chapter book than a typical picture book. But the story is easy to follow and to be divided into sections. Both beginner and more advanced readers can enjoy the book at their own pace.
