My Review:
Featuring beautiful artwork and colorful characters, Anything But Pink presents a delightful story about self-love and self-acceptance. Zinnia is perfectly happy with being the only pink person in a golden world until a mean boy makes a nasty comment about her color on the first day of school. Feeling compelled to change her skin color, Zinnia sets out on an expedition to the legendary Kaleidoscope Volcano, in hopes of finding the Crystal Prism that makes all the colors of the world. During her journey, she encounters three special children, each in a different color and with a stimulating message to share.
Pink is the color frequently associated with love and affection. It is also a very popular dreamy color among girls. Young readers are very likely to side with the charming pink girl and feel strongly about how unfair and hurtful the bully's ridicule is. The employment of vibrant colors and stunning natural scenery in the illustrations fits neatly with the book's theme, showing that diversity makes the world prettier and more interesting. Zinnia's adventure is made more enchanting and memorable by its fairy tale elements. My little one is particularly fascinated by the Cloud Escalator which connects the golden city up in the air and the Earth-like place where the Kaleidoscope Volcano is located. He keeps wondering how it feels to walk on the fluffy-looking Cloud Escalator and how fast it can move.
The lessons Zinnia learns from her colorful new friends are simple yet empowering: don't be afraid to stand out from the crowd for being unique; opinions are not to be mistaken for facts and be careful not to let what others say or think about you bias your own judgement; love yourself as who you are and learn to embrace the one and only YOU. Parents may want to point out that uniqueness doesn't have to be limited to physical appearance. One may stand out with their ability or personality as well. This book is worth reading over and over again to reinforce positive thinking and nurture self-love.
