My Review:
Boy Between Worlds: The Novice Collector is an entertaining and educational book that follows teenager Max's exhilarating time travel adventure in Egypt. On the day he turns 13, Max makes up his mind to follow the footsteps of his grandfather to become a novice collector. Determined to bring down the Lieutenant, head of an antiquities trafficking gang, and return all of Egypt’s stolen treasure to its rightful owners, Max learns to use the cabinet of curiosities' ancient magic to shuffle between the world of reality and a world of enchantment and wonder.
While this book picks up Max's story exactly where book one left off, those who haven't read the first book won't find the sequel hard to follow. Traces of what happened in the previous book get revealed bit by bit through Max's recollections. Young readers are sure to have fun putting the puzzle pieces together.
The two worlds - fantasy vs reality - are woven seamlessly together to keep the story smooth and engaging. The young hero's personality is wittily reflected through his inner thoughts, his actions and reactions, and even the food he likes to eat. As they follow along Max's adventure, readers are introduced to the fascinating history and culture of ancient Egypt.
The story encourages youngsters to follow their passion, pursue their dream, and make independent decisions wisely. Meanwhile, it helps raise awareness about the threat of antiquities trafficking to the precious cultural heritage of mankind. This book is definitely a worthy read for anyone interested in time travel, Egyptian culture, archeology, or antiquities collection.
