About the Book

Written by Katie Frawley, illustrated by Laurie Stansfield
Publisher: Two Lions; Ages 3-7

This adorable trading-places story involves Fritz, a jovial elephant and Tabitha, a pampered tabby cat. Fritz goes to live in the city while Tabitha tries out the jungle. They find out whether the grass really is greener…on the other side of the world!

My Review:

Tabitha and Fritz Trade Places is a funny and fascinating read that follows the eventful adventures of Tabitha, a coddled suburban cat seeking a wild world experience, and Fritz, a friendly elephant looking to celebrate his birthday with a trip to somewhere far away from the jungle. Soon after they get in touch online via, they decide to travel across the globe to trade places with each other. Both really enjoy their stay in their new homes until things start to get out of hand...

One unique feature about this book is that the story is told through email exchanges between Tabitha and Fritz. The writing style in their emails speaks a lot about their personalities and how their perspectives differ due to their original living environment and life experience. The story is not complete however, without its wonderful illustrations, which not only bring to life tons of adorable animal characters (including those not mentioned in the text), but also provide essential details to help readers fully get the humor out of those emails. For instance, it's not possible to understand what Tabitha really means by "scratching posts" or "personal litter box" without looking at the pictures.

It's only natural for us to get tired of daily routines and long for a change of pace. This adorable book encourages us to get out of our comfort zone, be adventurous, and open-minded. On the other hand, it inspires us to cherish what we may have taken for granted in the past. It also helps get young readers prepared for possible cultural shocks they may experience when exploring different parts of the world. The book is so much fun to read for both me and my kids.
