Six Thousand Doughnuts Blog Tour: Review & Prize Pack Giveaway

What do you think would happen if someone tries to buy 6,000 doughnuts with three bucks? Read Six Thousand Doughnuts by writer/filmmaker Thomas Tosi and you won't be disappointed. While you're here, be sure to enter to win a fun prize pack!

My Review:

Six Thousand Doughnuts is a wildly entertaining illustrated chapter book for anyone who loves to be amused and doesn't mind a little madness. It all starts with a game piece with a winning message on it. While the prize is nice: one doughnut at the Sweetly Crisp shop, what grabs the attention of sharp-minded fifth-grader Abe is the fine print on the back indicating the cash equivalent of the prize is one twentieth of a cent. By Abe's calculation, this means he could get six thousand doughnuts with the precious three dollars he manages to get from her younger sister (with a means he's not particularly proud of). Unfortunately, the shop owner is not at all convinced, and his attempt to claim his slick deal ends up in a chaotic food fight, the video of which goes viral online.

After being invited to the “The Judge Sally Rules" show, Abe is more determined than ever to make a case for his rightful, logical demand, with his lawyer-in-training cousin volunteering to represent him in court. In the courtroom however, Abe finds himself torn between the difficult choices of his sensitive little sister, whose secret he promises not to spill, the girl he has a crush on and has no intention of hurting, and the six thousand doughnuts he has fought so hard for. Will he find the best way out?

The story is action-packed, full of hilarious, out-of-the-ordinary scenarios heading in hard-to-predict directions. The wacky black and white illustrations add to the humor and craziness of the book. With a diverse mix of characters and a balanced representation of both genders, the story features youngsters in different age groups, from middle graders to college students. Meanwhile, it covers relationship issues of various kinds, including family, siblings, friends, schoolmates, teacher-student, parent-child, etc. Through Abe's inner struggle and self reflection, the book unequivocally instructs young readers to be kind, honest, compassionate, conscientious, courageous and willing to share. I love that the book promotes positivity with an incredible sense of humor that young readers can easily appreciate and resonate with. It'd make a perfect pick for summer reads.

Why would anyone need six thousand doughnuts?

Big family…little house… Fifth-grader Abe Mitchell is fed up with sharing. All he wants is something to call his own. And he just might get it when he finds a loophole in the fine print of a doughnut shop coupon. Abe thinks it entitles him to a fresh-baked mountain of crullers, dunkers, and chocolate-frosteds. But cashing in means war with Marlene Paczki, the daughter of the doughnut shop owner and Abe’s new crush.
