Nattie’s mouth was a little crooked. Her legs were a bit shorter than usual, and one horn was too straight, like a unicorn’s horn. But Mia thought Nattie was perfect. In a read-aloud picture book for children who love animals, award-winning writer and sheep breeder Marlene M. Bell presents Nattie the lamb’s true story. MIA AND NATTIE is a heartwarming book that teaches readers about problem-solving, teamwork, and love. On a visit to her grandma’s farm, eight-year-old Mia discovers a newborn, orphaned lamb outside in the cold and takes her to the laundry room, naming her Nattie. As she tries to nurse the lamb back to health, Mia discovers that Nattie is different from the other lambs and struggles to fit in with them like Mia does with other kids her age. When her grandmother says she will sell Nattie to a neighbor, Mia must come up with a plan to keep her friend around—one that will show the family just how special Nattie truly is.

My Review:

Inspired by the true story of the author's sheep Natalie, Mia and Nattie: One Great Team tells about the incredible friendship between a little girl named Mia and her little lamb Nattie. One thing the two share in common is that they are both smaller in size than their peers. Besides, Nattie was born with a few defects that make her look quite different from the rest of the flock and make it impossible for her to have babies. Instead of giving her up, Mia showers Nattie with love and helps her discover her special talent that proves her worth on the farm. Together, Mia and Nattie make a great team to look after sheep (both old and young) in need of special care.

Over the course of the story, Mia is faced with at least three challenges: how to help Nattie survive as a baby lamb without milk from her mom, how to help Nattie live like other sheep when grandma askes Mia to move Nattie outside the house, and how to keep Nattie on the farm when grandma wants to sell her to a neighbor. Luckily for Nattie, Mia remains a positive thinker and efficient problem-solver.

I enjoyed reading this book with my preschooler. Its colorful illustrations and lovely characters are appealing to young children. The story is interesting and easy to follow. My favorite thing about the book is its heartwarming message about love, compassion, kindness, friendship, teamwork and responsibility. It also teaches about problem-solving and constructive thinking. As a long-time sheep lover, my little boy got really excited when he spotted the photo of the real-life version of Nattie on the last page of the book. Mia and Nattie: One Great Team may become a storytime favorite for animal lovers of all ages.
