While some kids have an imaginary friend in their company, some may have imaginary monsters that attempt to stop them from trying something new, such as sleeping alone. Jessica Woo's new picture book What to Do About Your Monsters helps children with sleep issues make peace with the "monsters" living in their bedrooms through a fun-filled story. My Review:
Kinzie feels frustrated by the naughty and noisy green monsters that appear at bedtime whenever her parents ask her to sleep by herself in her own bedroom. Her solution used to be either sleeping in her parents' room or having her parent stay in her own. But when her parents are finally determined to have her sleep on her own, she has to come up with more creative ideas about getting rid of those monsters. After trying various tricks like warm milk, warm bath, and deep breathing, Kinzie succeeds in putting the monsters to sleep with a lullaby and falling fast asleep herself.
Thanks to her solid professional background in animation and illustration, the author brings the little girl Kinzie and her cute looking monsters to life with funny and whimsical pictures, accompanied by an abundance of vivid sound words. The reader can clearly sense the struggle Kinzie has to go through on her way to becoming a big kid.
Told in a childlike but witty tone, the story encourages young readers to grow into more independent and creative problem solvers, and to conquer their fear to try something new and challenging. Instead of simply telling them that there are no monsters in their rooms, the book teaches children about how to calm down and turn those monsters into harmless creatures that won't bother them any more. It's a very sweet bedtime story that kids and parents can enjoy together.
About the Book:
Publisher’s Synopsis: Meet Kinzie. She has a bunch of fun-loving, slightly smelly, Monsters that live in her room. They never let her sleep at night. But that’s ok, her parents always help her out. Until one day they decide it’s time she learns to sleep on her own. What will Kinzie do about her Monsters?
What To Do About Your Monsters is a heartfelt story about a girl who has sleep issues. At its core, however, the story is not just about having problems sleeping, but about being afraid to try something new.
