My Review:

The EQ Explorers series consists of a growing number of picture books, each teaching young readers about an important aspect of emotional intelligence, such as what to do about unkind comments from peers, how to keep a happy heart and positive attitude, and why it is not wise to frequently compare with others. The three books I've read from the series (Wally Whale’s Mighty Tail, Compare Bear’s Double Dare and Jo Jo Giraffe’s Big Laugh) share several common structural features.

Each story starts with the encounter between two main characters: one child and one wild animal. One of the characters has to deal with a certain challenge in life while the other helps him or her find the solution by sharing their own experience and by encouraging their new friend to think or behave differently. In each book, the primary educational message gets reinforced and better understood as the characters go through different scenarios with the same underlying cause and effect. At the end of each story, a set of questions are provided to facilitate discussion and deeper thinking around the topic, along with fun facts about the animal being featured.

All the books are visually appealing, with colorful illustrations, adorable characters, high quality glossy pages, and sturdy covers. While the life lessons may not get through instantly for younger readers, the stories are charming enough to keep them wanting to read over and over again. Among the three books, my preschooler loves Compare Bear's Double Dare best. He finds it really funny and easy to understand. From a parent's perspective, I love how the series helps children learn to stay away from negative emotions and to become more confident through imaginative stories and playful characters. I'm sure the EQ Explorers series would make a wonderful addition to your child's reading list this summer!
