Guest Post: Should You Open a Custodial Roth IRA For Your Child?

The pros, cons, and what parents should know before getting started.

If you’re anything like me, there’s a moment where it suddenly hits you: Oh wow, we’re responsible for helping them make smart money choices. Not just saving for college or covering the next sports fee, but teaching them how money works long-term.

For some parents, that realization may come when a teenager starts earning money. For others, it may come much earlier.

One financial tool you may consider is a Custodial Roth IRA.

At first glance, it can sound a little…intense. A retirement account for a kid? When they still need reminders to put their shoes away? Totally fair reaction. But the reason so many parents are curious about Custodial Roth IRAs is simple: time. When you start investing for your child early—even if it’s just small amounts—they have decades for that money to grow.

That said, a Custodial Roth IRA isn’t a magic solution or a must-do for every family. There are some really compelling benefits, but there are also trade-offs that parents should understand before jumping in.

What Is a Custodial Roth IRA?

At its core, a Custodial Roth IRA is just a retirement account for a child who earns money—but with a grown-up managing it (that’s the “custodial” part).

Because kids under 18 (or 21, depending on your state) can’t legally open and manage their own investment accounts, a parent or guardian steps in as the custodian. You’re the one opening the account, choosing the investments, and keeping things on track—for now. The account itself, though, is in your child’s name, and eventually, it becomes fully theirs.

The big requirement to know upfront? Your child must have earned income. That means money from an actual job—like working at a coffee shop, lifeguarding, babysitting, tutoring, or even certain types of self-employment. Birthday money, allowance, and chore payments don’t count here, which surprises a lot of parents at first.

What makes a Custodial Roth IRA especially appealing is how it’s funded. Contributions are made with after-tax dollars, but once the money is in the account, it can grow tax-free. And if your child follows the rules, they’ll be able to withdraw that money tax-free in retirement.

One important thing to understand is that this isn’t a savings account you can dip into whenever you want. While there’s some flexibility, the purpose of a Custodial Roth IRA is long-term growth.

Eventually—usually when your child turns 18 or 21—the custodial part ends, and full control of the account transfers to them. At that point, the money is theirs to manage.

My Review:

I was given the opportunity to watch the film before it hits the theaters. The 90-minute documentary impresses me as eye-opening and thought-provoking. By following the homeschooling journeys of different families across the nation, the film addresses the doubts and concerns about homeschooling, while demonstrating both the challenges and accomplishments associated with homeschooling. Most importantly, it explores all the great advantages of homeschooling - freedom, flexibility, diversity, customizability, and more. This more personalized approach to education allows students to learn at their own pace, to adjust their curriculum based on their interests and strengths, and to gain hands-on, real-life experience on things they are truly passionate about.

The authentic voices of the happy homeschoolers featured in the film not only help refute common misconceptions about homeschooling, but also help parents become more confident about their ability to cultivate the love for learning. Parents are their children's first teachers and can be their best ones too! The Homeschool Awakening would be most inspiring and reassuring for parents who find formal education a poor fit for their children, but are not entirely sure if homeschooling offers a better alternative or how to make it work.

The Golden Quest: Your Journey to a Rich Life Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway

Have you ever come across a children's book that you wish to be around when you were young? To me, David Delisle's The Golden Quest is one of those books. The sooner you read it, the longer you can benefit from it. Order a copy today or enter to win one during this tour!

My Review:

Taking the form of a graphic novel, The Golden Quest makes early financial education as much fun as possible by ingeniously incorporating elements of action, adventure, fantasy, suspense and humor into one captivating story. Following their family tradition, a young boy's parents gift him an heirloom map on his birthday and send him off the next day to a quest for the Golden Rules of Money. His quest turns out to be quite an adventure. At each stop, he gets acquainted with someone special - a mysterious monk who loves tea, a foodie dragon who sells roasted marshmallows, a university professor with a funny name and a crazy hairstyle reminiscent of Albert Einstein, just to name a few. Through their conversations and personal stories, the boy learns about how to spend wisely, how to save sufficiently, how to generate a sustainable cash flow, how to give back, and ultimately how to achieve financial freedom.

The book's appealing artwork and intriguing plots allow young readers to understand and memorize the basic concepts and guiding principles about personal finance without being bored or intimated by complex calculations or difficult jargon. I'm a bit surprised to find that weeks after reading the story, my youngest still remembers all the Golden Rules of Money with considerable accuracy. Leaning on ancient wisdom from around the world, the powerful messages embedded in these short rules help lay the foundation for a healthy attitude toward money and wealth. The word "rich" is not to be interpreted in purely monetary terms. A rich life refers to a happy, meaningful and fulfilling life with freedom for what matters most. While wanting more may kill the joy of having more, the act of giving may circle back to the giver someday. Besides, the boy's rapid growth throughout the course of the quest demonstrates the incredible value of kindness, courage, grit and self-control.

Financial literacy can be a lifelong learning process. It's important to give your children a head start with books like The Golden Quest. The valuable lessons within are worth passing on from generation to generation.

About the Book:

Ages 5-18 | 108 Pages

Excerpt:

PICTURE PERFECT

Reena studies herself in mirror, prodding and pinching her body.

Fat! Fat! FAT!

Stands back for full view before addressing audience.

The only thing not fat is my head. Actually, it’s too small for my body. Great, I’m deformed too.

At the portrait gallery I went to with Nan last week, there was a huge black and white photo of an old woman sitting at a café. Her cheeks were all wrinkly and droopy, like our pug Otis, and she was wearing the skimpiest outfit, just a singlet and drawstring shorts. It was kinda gross cos rolls of fat were escaping everywhere, like sausage meat popping out of the casing. But she had the biggest smile, like she was a beauty queen decked out in the most expensive designer gown ever. My brain was screaming, Look away but my eyes weren’t listening. I voted that one for People’s Choice cos a great photo captures your attention, makes you react. Nan didn’t vote. She said, ‘Nasreena’ – cos she still can’t call me Reena like everyone else – ‘Nasreena, a great portrait captures a person’s essence, so how can anyone judge another person’s photo?’ And I thought, Oh my God! I love that word, Ehhh- ssssssence.
I’m still trying to find my essence but I don’t know what I’m searching for. Is it a sparkle? Does it change all the time? Will other people see it through this?

Grabs her flesh.

I wish I could be put through a photocopier. I’d hit sixty percent reduction and voila! Instant happiness! Cos except for that old lady in the pic, it’s skinny girls who have the biggest smiles on their faces. And they’re everywhere! Skinny girls in magazines with stick legs in high heels carrying oversized handbags.
Skinny girls on TV in string bikinis frolicking in the surf, showing off their thigh gaps.

Scanning her feed.

They’re online, too. I mean, hello? Have you ever checked out Instagram? The whole point is to be seen, living and loving life. To have people follow you. To wanna be you. All my friends have over a thousand followers and ya know how many I have? Three hundred ninety-six! Cos no one wants to flick through photos of fatties! But I’ve changed all that. Yep, you’re looking at ‘NazzyXO’ with … wait for it … twelve hundred twenty-four followers.

Checks phone, smiling.

Make that twelve hundred twenty-eight followers.

How’d I do it? Well it’s funny, cos I used to hate getting my photo taken … until I discovered these awesome apps to create a better version of me. Someone taller, thinner, tanner. I can change my hair, my clothes, even my eye colour. I mean, there’s no point being on Facebook and Instagram if you look like shit, right? But with the right apps, anything’s possible. There’s even a formula: Photo, Filter, Caption. See, the trick is making the photos look natural, like you just happen to be out and …

Poses for selfies.

Photo: My legs, beach in background. Filter: Cool Breeze. Caption: Summer days, sun emoji, thumbs up! Photo: My lips with a glimpse of my bra. Filter: Mayfair. Caption: Up close and personal, winky face. Photo: My butt, photoshopped. Obviously. Filter: Black and White … it’s all about the vibe. Caption: Tongue out dollar emoji.

So what if I’m only thirteen? It’s not like anyone’s gonna find out. No one even knows it’s me! That’s cos I use a filter for all my pics. Enough so they look like me, but not enough that they look like me, if ya know what I mean. So what if it’s not really me? It’s the future me, the one I aspire to. If you’re looking for a dress, you don’t buy the first one you try on, right? You go through a few and pick the one that’s the best fit. That’s what I’m doing. Shopping for the best version of me. Cos why would I wanna be me when I could be …

Holds up phone.

Me! NazzyXO is perfect, and everyone loves her.

Checks phone, excited.

Check out these comments: ‘Killer, knife emoji, flame. Yum, tongue out emoji. Beauty.’ See?

Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway (10 Winners)

If you are interested in getting a systematic analysis and deeper understanding of children's literature, Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism written by Tom Durwood would be a great book to start. Learn more about it and enter to win 1 of 10 copies!

My Review:

For me, Kid Lit: An Introduction to Literary Criticism is a rather dense and insightful read. I'm truly impressed with the breadth and depth of knowledge being covered and I really appreciate the author's clear and concise writing style. Following a clarification of the goal the author tries to achieve through his writing and research, the book starts with a brief overview of the history of children's literature, or Kid Lit for short, the scope of which the author has broadened to include movies, comics and online games in addition to books.

The book is then organized into three major sections. The first section presents what the author refers to as the "Lit Crit Toolbox," which lays out the analytical and theoretical tools commonly used to critique children's literature and literary works in general. I find this section to be particularly informative and interesting. It not only explains such basic concepts as plot, theme, character, setting, etc, but also summarizes the structural similarities and differences in Kid Lit across time, culture, and genre.

The second part of the book provides six in-depth case studies consisting of interviews with literary scholars, editorial notes and references to scholarly research. While the discussions are highly professional, the cases the author picks are quite familiar to the general public, such as the Lion King, Star Wars, and Harry Potter. I love that the author highlights the essential messages in bold letters and in textboxes throughout the book, so that the readers won't miss them. The book concludes with a reiteration of its mission and lesson plans filled with challenging and thought-provoking exercises for serious students of children's literature.

As the author stresses repeatedly, the book is intended to equip students with marketable skills that go well beyond the field of literature, including critical thinking, logical reasoning, and creative writing. The book also takes the time to explore the impact of history, culture and politics on the development of children's literature. It is a very resourceful book that can be used as a textbook for an introductory course on children's literature or a reference for those who are really into the subject matter.

About the Book:

All Ages | 220 Pages
Publisher: Empire Studies Press | ISBN-13: 9781952520044

We are surrounded by narratives, in fiction and in our everyday lives. In this colorful collection of ideas, the author argues that understanding the components of our favorite children’s stories can lead to a lifetime of critical thinking.

Beginning with the elements of the universal coming-of-age narrative, “Kid Lit” shows young readers and general readers alike how to recognize story structure, class, gender, symbolism, trauma and Orientalism in children’s narratives.

Of value to all teachers, students, librarians, readers, literature lovers, and moviegoers.

It's Me Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway

Everyone is different and it's the uniqueness of each individual that makes the world diverse and interesting. But sometimes one might get hurt simply because he or she is different from the majority in one way or another. The wound can be even harder to heal for tweens and teens. In his book It's Me, Jeff Kubiak tells real stories of students, teachers and educators whose lives have been impacted by prejudice. Learn more about this book and enter to win a signed copy.

About the Book: Book Title: It's Me by Jeff Kubiak
Category: Middle-Grade Non-Fiction (Ages 8-12), 57 pages
Genre: Children's/Middle Grade, Non-fiction, own voices
Publisher: EduMatch Publishing
Release date: November 14, 2020
Tour dates: Jan 25 to Feb 12, 2021
Content Rating: PG. Although the book reads like a graphic novel, it does contain topics dealing with racism and other social issues.

It's Me is dedicated to every person who has ever felt less about who they are or want to be because of someone else’s opinion, feelings, or prejudice. Let's ditch the prejudiced labeling, and embrace our Human Race for the diversity, inclusivity, equity, and individuality we all deserve.

My Review:

It's Me is a touching and thought-provoking book consisting of 20 short poems, each featuring an individual that gets misunderstood, laughed at, or even discriminated against due to their physical appearance, language barrier, country of origin, or health issues. In each vignette, the person describes why he or she is considered different by their peers, how they feel about being treated unfairly, and more importantly, what specialties or strengths they possess that deserve to be recognized and appreciated.

With a careful collection of real stories covering a wide variety of inequity problem areas, the book encourages tweens and teens to embrace their individuality, to be aware of their self-worth, and to boost their self-esteem. Meanwhile, it warns about the psychological harm that prejudice and discrimination can do to a youngster. The illustrations help drive the message home by showing the struggle that each storyteller undergoes through their facial expression and body language. Some of the stories reveal parenting pitfalls that any well-meaning parent should avoid. The book also includes a glossary explaining all the medical terms that appear in the stories and a list of helpful resources promoting early detection of health problems that may affect a child's behavior and academic performance.

The book is an educational read about equity, diversity, inclusivity, and individuality that I'd recommend to everyone. It takes all of us, not just those who are suffering from prejudical labeling, to make a difference.

Buy the Book: Amazon | Eva Grayzel | B&N

My Review:

M.C. Plays Hide and Seek is a highly inspiring, informative, and educational book written in kid-friendly language. As a personified creature representing a cancer cell, M.C. brags about how well it plays its favorite game hide and seek. By inviting the reader to play the Name-The-Doctor game, it lists the various kinds of doctors that try to find it and how they go about searching for clues. The game of hide and seek won't be over until M.C. is found. The good news is that it is not contagious.

The latter half of the book addresses children's need to express their feelings when they know that someone they love has been diagnosed with cancer. It also suggests possible ways in which children may help find a cure for cancer and how healthy lifestyle changes may help them outsmart M.C. Good things can still happen despite how mischievious M.C. can get. Love is the most powerful medicine of all!

The combination of pictures of real people and funny cartoons, along with the lighted-hearted tone of the narrator (i.e. M.C.), makes the subject less scary without understating its serious impact. I love how the book encourages us to stay positive and resilient in the face of adversity. It teaches about courage, compassion, kindness, love and support, which are qualities we'd like our children to possess whether cancer is involved or not. I agree with the author that honesty works better than secrecy to help minimize fear. The key is to find the right balance between not enough and too much information based on a child's age and emotional capacity. In my opinion, the book is worth reading for all children, not just those in families affected by cancer.

EQ Explorers Blog Tour: Review and Prize Pack Giveaway

What's on your kids' summer reading list this year? While you are trying to keep the learning momentum going for their academic skills in math, reading and science, don't forget about their need for character building and emotion management! I'm so excited to see a children's picture book series dedicated to inspiring youngsters to live a happy and meaningful life. Check out EQ Explorers by Kim Linette's and enter to win a joy-filled prize pack!

My Review:

The EQ Explorers series consists of a growing number of picture books, each teaching young readers about an important aspect of emotional intelligence, such as what to do about unkind comments from peers, how to keep a happy heart and positive attitude, and why it is not wise to frequently compare with others. The three books I've read from the series (Wally Whale’s Mighty Tail, Compare Bear’s Double Dare and Jo Jo Giraffe’s Big Laugh) share several common structural features.

Each story starts with the encounter between two main characters: one child and one wild animal. One of the characters has to deal with a certain challenge in life while the other helps him or her find the solution by sharing their own experience and by encouraging their new friend to think or behave differently. In each book, the primary educational message gets reinforced and better understood as the characters go through different scenarios with the same underlying cause and effect. At the end of each story, a set of questions are provided to facilitate discussion and deeper thinking around the topic, along with fun facts about the animal being featured.

All the books are visually appealing, with colorful illustrations, adorable characters, high quality glossy pages, and sturdy covers. While the life lessons may not get through instantly for younger readers, the stories are charming enough to keep them wanting to read over and over again. Among the three books, my preschooler loves Compare Bear's Double Dare best. He finds it really funny and easy to understand. From a parent's perspective, I love how the series helps children learn to stay away from negative emotions and to become more confident through imaginative stories and playful characters. I'm sure the EQ Explorers series would make a wonderful addition to your child's reading list this summer!

Grow Through It Blog Tour: Review & Giveaway (10 Winners)

We are almost halfway through 2020, a year that will be remembered by tons of unusual moments in human history. The pandemic has brought about so much disruption to our normal life that a lot of grown-ups find it extremely hard to accept or adapt to those unwanted changes, let alone the kids. The new children's picture book Grow Through It by Jay Dee sheds light on how parents could help the little ones understand the current situation and make the best out of it.

My Review:
Grow Through It resonates strongly with me as it pinpoints the major challenges that children and their parents have to face during this trying time. The confusion and frustration that Ellen struggles with in the story all sounds too real and familiar. She misses school, her friends, and her grandma. What could she do when she has no choice but to stay at home most of the time? Ellen's mom offers her two choices: to get through it (by playing video games and watching TV all day) or grow through it (by doing things that help her become a better self, such as learning to share housework, showing kindness to neighbors, and staying connected with loved ones through video chats, etc.) Naturally, Ellen goes with the easier option first. But after being bored by trying to "get through it", she finds "grow through it" to be a smarter and more fulfilling choice.

The book clearly encourages young readers to stay positive and adaptive when confronted with new challenges. My favorite character from the story is Ellen's mom. I love the way she communicates with her daughter, allows her to make mistakes, and teaches her about kindness, responsibility, and generosity. Besides delivering empowering messages to kids and parents alike, the book also pays tribute to all the frontliners who are working fearlessly for the good of us as a whole. Grow Through It is no doubt the perfect inspiring read for this special time and for any difficult situation that we may need to stand up to in the future!

Ellen is stuck at home. There’s no school and no friends, and Mom is working all the time. It seems terrible until she learns about the choice each day offers: GET through it or GROW through it. See how starting each day with purpose and gratitude can make all the difference! Created during the CV-19 pandemic, 100% of the proceeds from sales of this book are donated to coronavirus relief efforts.

Do You Like Trains? Gift Set Review

Do you have a little train lover at home? I sure do! Although the boys can no longer visit the beach to watch their favorite Surfliners roaring through, they certainly enjoy feeding their passion for trains by reading Do You Like Trains?, an adorable children's picture book written by Ann Tarpley Francesco and illustrated by Rebecca Solow.

Ann has kindly sent us a beautifully packaged Do You Like Trains Gift Set, which includes a hardcover copy of her new book Do You Like Trains?, along with supplies for fun art and craft activities featuring characters from the book.

About the Book:

In the spirit of Dr. Seuss, Do You Like Trains? is written in rhyme to make it fun as readers are introduced to a train-loving squirrel who enthusiastically shares a variety of reasons behind his favorite playtime activity with a new raccoon friend. From interesting train facts to encouraging being open to others' interests, this book will be as fun for adults to read to their children as it will be for children to read to themselves and each other.

My Review:
Filled with fun rhymes and short sentences, Do You Like Trains? is a book that pleases your ears and warms your heart when you read it aloud. As the little squirrel cheerfully chats about all that he loves about trains, he successfully ignites one's strong interest in the subject, including both his new friend raccoon and the readers.

With the help of vivid, realistic, and colorful illustrations, the book not only informs young readers about various fun facts related to trains, but it also gets them acquainted with different animals that make a guest appearance in the pictures.

Besides fueling their passion for trains, the story also encourages young readers to make new friends, to share their knowledge of what they love, to be open to new adventures, and to appreciate an interest that might be very different from their own.

The Do You Like Trains? gift set comes with an 8-pack box of Crayola crayons, a holiday train scene coloring page, and a cut-out finger puppets coloring page to add to the fun of reading. A lovely organza draw-string bag is also included to keep everything in one place. It sure makes a charming and long-lasting gift for the little ones, which will keep their minds open and busy.

Your may order the gift set on locomotionpress.com. The book is also available on Amazon.

About the Author
Ann Tarpley Francesco attended Radford University in Radford, Virginia where she earned her teaching certification for early childhood and middle education. Ann also earned a B.A. in business administration at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Two lesson plans she developed were included in teacher resource books entitled, Sweet Numbers (Learn Every Day About Numbers, Gryphon House Books) and Yummy Colors (Learn Every Day About Colors, Gryphon House Books). Her son, Matthew, inspired her writing through his love of trains, first in poetic responses she would include in his first grade parent/student writing assignments and then as a short story. Ann's first book, The Gingerbread Train-Santa's Secret Gift emerged when she was inspired to write a children's book as a gift to her children. Both Matthew and her daughter, Courtney were the inspiration behind the two lead characters in the book. Do You Like Trains? was also written as a result of the first grade parent/student assignment. It was written in the spirit of Dr. Seuss because the students were celebrating Dr. Seuss week in school. Ann loved creating rhyming poetry and incorporated trains and what the students were learning in class in her poems. In her spare time, she enjoys working out at the gym, cooking, traveling, and creating unique sugar scrubs and body butters. She is an impassioned advocate of healthy living and an active lifestyle.
