Tips on Seasonal Allery Relief for Kids #CleverAllergyfriendly

I wrote this post while participating in a blog tour conducted by Clever Girls Collective on behalf of Children's Claritin®. I have been compensated for my time commitment to the program.

Seasonal Allergy is a major spring-time nuisance. Allergy symptoms are especially disturbing for kids, who may suffer from sleep loss, fatigue, and even learning problems. I often wish I could trade places with my son when I hear him toss and turn in bed due to stuffed nose or intermittent coughing. He looks miserable with red, itchy and watery eyes when staying outdoors. I'm constantly on the lookout for ways to help him feel better and here are some tips that I've found most effective in providing allergy relief for my child.
  • Monitor pollen level and plan outdoor activities accordingly. I check local pollen levels every day on Weather.com and try to keep my son playing indoors when the levels are high.
  • Drink plenty of water. It's important to keep children hydrated regardless of whether they are allergy sufferers. Kids with allergy are particularly in need of water to help them recover from the aftermath of sneezing and coughing. Warm (not hot) water with honey really works to soothe coughs and sore throats.
  • Change clothes and take a warm bath or shower after playing outside for an extended period of time. This helps to minimize exposure to allergens that might have been brought back home.
  • Use a humidifier. Keeping indoor air at a safe moisture level (30%-50%) helps alleviate breathing problems. My son goes to sleep faster and sleeps better when the humidifier is on.
  • Use protective bedding products and change regularly. We've using mattress protectors and pillow cases with allergy control features for a while and noticed improvements in our sleep quality. My son loves the feel of the fabric of his allergy proof pillow case.
Claritin, the only brand of OTC medicine that provides non-drowsy, 24-hour allergy relief for children, has put together a very useful Allergy Guide for Moms and Kids (see the slides below). It covers the common symptoms of seasonal allergy, outdoor and indoor allergy triggers, the differences between allergy and cold, tips for allergy relief, and fun game ideas for the allergy season. Check it out!

Filtrete Elite Allergen Reduction Filter & Tips for a Healthier Home

I once participated in an online focus group composed of moms of young children. We were asked to list the top 10 concerns we have with regard to taking care of our kids. Not very surprisingly, keeping children safe and healthy was among the top 3 concerns of all participants.

As their organs and respiratory, immune and neurological systems are still developing, young children tend to be more sensitive to harmful substances such as certain chemicals, particles and allergens. Most people with allergies develop them during childhood. It is highly important for parents to take proactive measures to create a safe and healthy home environment for their children.

Mom Central recently introduced me to the ABC's to help maintain a healthier home environment for children suggested by Dr. Alanna Levine, Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics (FAAP). I'd like to share them with you:

A is for Avoid: Whenever possible, avoid irritants that often trigger allergies, such as products made of feathers or down. Use hypoallergenic pillows on your child's bed, and limit exposure to perfume, talcum powder, hair spray, air fresheners, fabric softeners or other strong odors or sprays. Strong fragrances and odors may aggravate allergy symptoms.

B is for Balance: Maintain a consistent balance in the home to help minimize allergens. Keep the windows shut and use central air conditioning during high pollen seasons to help protect children from pollen particles that trees, grasses and weeds release into the air. These particles can harbor in the eyes, nose, and airways, causing allergy symptoms to flair for those allergic to pollen. Also, give children washable, non-allergenic stuffed toys when possible, and be sure to wash the ones played with the most on a weekly basis, in hot water at least 130 degrees Fahrenheit.

C is for Change: Change items that are easy to neglect but are important for maintaining a healthier home, such as leaky faucets, pipes and other high moisture areas that are common places for mold growth. Don't neglect their air in the home either. Change your filter every three months, and use a high performance filter, such as a Filtrete Elite Allergen Reduction Filter from 3M.
Indoor air commonly contains visible particles like household dust and microscopic particles that can carry viruses, bacteria and odors. The Filtrete Elite Allergen Reduction Filter captures 94 percent of large airborne particles, such as household dust, pollen and mold spores, from the air passing through the filter. It also captures up to 40 times more microscopic particles, such as smoke, smog and particles that can carry bacteria and viruses, than ordinary fiberglass filters.

Filtrete's Clear Advantages program offers healthy home living tips, money saving offers, filter change reminders, FREE air quality guide and more via a seasonal e-newsletter. Be sure to join the program and follow Filtrete on Twitter and Facebook for more useful information.

Besides using an allergen reduction air filter, there are a few more things you can do to ensure that the air you and your child breathe is healthier.
  • Make sure your indoor paints are lead free and have been independently certified for low chemical emissions, known as VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions;
  • Choose solid wood furniture over pressed wood furniture, which can release potentially harmful chemicals like formaldehyde into the air;
  • Clean regularly with eco-friendly, fragrance-free products as much as possible. Try chemical alternatives like vinegar and baking soda and you will be surprised by what they can accomplish.
  • Use a humidifier to provide natural relief for allergy. Keep humidification levels within the 30%-50% range for best results.
  • Use an HEPA vacuum cleaner to minimize the amount of harmful particles and allergens being released back into the air.
Hope you'll find these tip helpful and start taking action to improve air quality in your home.

Disclosure: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Filtrete and received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Let's Flip for Fall: Ultimate Checklist and Aller-Ease Winner

Thanks to all your wonderful participation, the "Ultimate Flip for Fall Checklist" is finally here! Is your tip on the list? Check it out--
  1. Wash furniture slipcovers and throws that aren’t on your bed and snuggle up withclean, allergen-free blankets.
  2. Keep your dryer vent clear: Excess lint in the dryer vent will cause extra dust to be released into your home. Speaking of laundry, flip those laundry loads quickly to avoid mold and mildew.
  3. Take down mini blinds, or at least while the curtains are washing, wipe blinds
clean of all dust and debris. While you’re at it, wash windows and seal windows
    along the edges.
  4. Change air filters, vents and maybe even call in the chimney sweeps!
  5. Clean the entire house using disinfectant, but especially don’t forget the phone
and door handles that are often overlooked. Steam clean the carpet as well.
  6. Create a Flip for Fall checklist for all the areas in your home (hall closet, master
bathroom, beds, pantry etc.). Once an area has been cleaned, check it off and
    include the date.
  7. Clean out old items in the garage and attic, and get seasonal decorations ready.
Use bins to organize by holiday or season so that you can easily locate them.
  8. Go through kids clothing and have them do a fashion show to make certain that
everything fits. Clean their closets while everything is out.
  9. Make sure your flashlights have batteries and stock up on emergency candles.
  10. Change the look and feel of your home with simple changes like hanging a fallthemed
welcome sign or changing your doormat, bring out seasonal candles, table
    decorations and even placemats.
Since great minds think alike, there were considerable overlaps among the tips that had been submitted. Aller-Ease has decided to enter all those that submitted the same or similar tip chosen for the checklist into a random drawing. The 10 Ultimate Checklist winners, the best video winner, and the most activity winner will be announced next week. Stay tuned!

We do have a winner for my Aller-Ease giveaway that ended last night. Among all the entries collected from my first two Flip for Fall posts, comment #82 was chosen by random.org. Heather @The Penny-Pinching Mama, you won! Congratulations!!! You will receive your Aller-Ease bedding set just in time for the allergy season.

For those who didn't win, you can still have 2 more chances to win at My Four Monkeys and Pretty Pink Momma. Both giveaways end tonight. Hurry!

Plus, from 9/21 to 10/30, Aller-Ease is giving away 25 Aller-Ease Deluxe HMT pillow protectors, 10 Aller-Ease Deluxe HMT pillow protectors with Allergen Barrier Pillows and one grand prize of an allergy-proofing bedroom makeover for the entire home (up to four beds). Find out how you can enter to win here.

Let's Flip for Fall: Meet Aller-Ease Products

I'm deeply impressed by your active participation in the Flip for Fall Challenge. Thank you so much for providing so many interesting and useful tips! Please be reminded that Sunday (9/20) is the last day to submit your tips for consideration of the Aller-Ease Ultimate Flip for Fall Checklist. If your tip gets chosen, you will not only be rewarded with an Aller-Ease Protective Bedding Set, but will also receive credit when the list is published in the media. Don't miss this great opportunity!

I just learned some disturbing facts from Aller-Ease website. A typical unprotected mattress may have anywhere from 10,000 to 10 million dust mites inside and double in weight every 10 years due to microscopic allergens that accumulate inside. An unprotected pillow increases in weight 10% every two years due to dust mites and dust mite feces. One out of four Americans suffer from asthma or allergies.

Use innovative fabric engineering techniques, Aller-Ease provides a range of allergen-filtration bedding products to protect us against common allergy and asthma triggers, including dust mite droppings, pollen, fungal and mold spores, and pet dander. Uniting science with comfort, Aller-Ease products are allergist-recommended and have earned the Good Housekeeping Seal!

Check out this short video showing you all the awesome Aller-Ease bedding products I received. These are exactly what you could win by entering my giveaway.

Don't forget to visit all the other moms on the team, watch their videos, read their tips, and enter their giveaways! Some of them end on Sunday too.
