My Review:

Inspired by the author's childhood memories, Needles, the Forgotten Christmas Tree presents an inspiring and heartwarming story about a little tree's journey to self fulfillment. Needles aspires to become a beautiful Christmas tree in someone's home and to bring joy to that family, although he's often the target of mockery for being smaller and having fewer branches than his peers at the Christmas tree farm. Little as he is, Needles refuses to belittle himself or to give up his big dream. Instead, he stands straight and tries to look his best. After being left alone and forgotten in various places, he finally gets to meet the one who finds him to be the perfect Christmas tree to take home!

Written from Needles' perspective, the book makes it easy for young readers to identify with the main character, to understand his feelings, and to root for him till the end. Using dreamy colors and realistic drawings, the illustrations add festivity and vitality to the story while reinforcing its messages about hope, beauty and happiness in artistic language.

One the one hand, the story urges youngsters to believe in their self-worth, to stick to their goals and not to give up hope when faced with obstacles and setbacks. On the other hand, it teaches about being kind and considerate to those who are different in some way, and warns against treating or judging someone solely based on their physical appearance. Further, it suggests that sharing and spreading love and joy lie in the essence of the Christmas spirit.

While real-life stories don't always have a happy ending, this book helps instill hope and optimism into young minds, who might need them to pull through tough times. It'd make a worthwhile addition to your holiday reading list.

The world is not always a perfect place. Needles, a scraggly little tree, must endure criticism, laughter, and setbacks to realize his goal of becoming a beautiful Christmas tree.

This is a story of dreams, desires, hope, determination, and never giving up. It also offers the observation that what others think is beautiful may not really matter. Beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder and paired with the spirit of Christmas, maybe we can make the world just a little more perfect!

About the Author:

Richard Wagner grew up in Southern California. When he was fourteen years old, a business friend of his father’s had a small Christmas tree delivered as a thank-you. Their family already had a large tree decorated in the house. Not being able to find anyone who needed a tree, that small Christmas tree stood outside by itself for the remainder of the Christmas holiday. Needles, the Forgotten Christmas Tree is a tribute to that little tree and what might have been, but more importantly, to all the beauty, goodness, and hope that Christmas brings to us all. Mr. Wagner continues to reside in Southern California with his wife and two children.
