Synopsis:

Be careful what you wish for. With their after school junk business, best friends Sonny and Sam hope to find treasure in other people’s trash. But when cleaning out the old Stine house, they open a locked book that frees a supernatural nightmare - Slappy! Now, with the help of Sonny’s sister Sarah, they’re in a race against time to get the sinister dummy and all the creatures he’s brought to life back into the pages before he unleashes total pandemonium!

Slappy the devious ventriloquist dummy returns to run amuck, in this second installment of the family-friendly franchise based on the best-selling Scholastic book series by R.L Stine. Standing in Slappy’s way is a terrifyingly talented cast including Wendi McLendon-Covey (The Goldbergs), Madison Iseman (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle), Jeremy Ray Taylor (It), Caleel Harris (Castle Rock), and Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty), with Ken Jeong (Crazy Rich Asians). The film was directed by Academy Award®-winner Ari Sandel (2005, Best Short Film-Live Action, West Bank Story).

In celebration of this upcoming release, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment sent us a fun gummy bear challenge kit, complete with a gianormous load of Haribo gummy bears, a mini treasure chest reminiscent of the one that appeared in the movie, holiday recipe cards, "Science with Slappy" card, and supplies for those recipes as well as for the gummy bear experiments.

As we are really curious about how well gummy bears could stand up to the toughest challenges, we started with the science experiment first. We put water, salt water, white vinegar and baking soda solution in each of the four test tubes labelled with tape and marker. Then we dropped one gummy bear in each tube and set aside one as the control sample.

We observed the gummy bears in the tubes for a little while, but didn't see any noticeable changes right away. So we decided to let them sit in the liquid overnight to see what would happen then. Would their color fade? Would they grow or shrink in size? Would the gummy bear in the vinegar dissolve partially, if not completely? What do you think the gummy bears would look like after being soaked for hours? Well, you've got to conduct your own experiment to find out the results. No spoiler from me :P. You are encouraged to get creative or adventurous about the types of liquid to use in the experiment. Here's a fun trick from Slappy: use tonic water and you'll see gummy bear glow in the dark!

The kit includes three recipes: Slappy's Holiday Thumbprint Cookies, Holiday Gummy Bear Bark, and Gummy Bear Holiday "Mocktails". All of them are easy to follow, with simple ingredients and a few steps. Even the kids can make these festive treats with a little help from their parents. Our favorite was the thumbprint cookies. We made 16 colorful, super tasty cookies using the suggested amount of ingredients in the recipe. Surprisingly they were not as sweet as I had expected. You may download the recipe card here.
