Synopsis:

Caro Drake, a brilliant but emotionally guarded American student, arrives at the University of Oxford with the goal of attaining her PhD. Through a turbulent friendship with a charming young man, she begins to open herself up to mystery, vulnerability, and love.

My Review:

Set on the beautiful campus of Oxford University, Surprised by Oxford is a romantic, thought-provoking movie about love, faith, self-fulfillment, and asking life's big questions. It gives us an insider view of one of the world’s most prestigious academic institutions, including its structures, traditions, and teaching styles. 

Caro is an intelligent, independent, and strong-minded young woman, but her childhood experience leaves her with serious trust issues. As we follow her journey from an agnostic to a Christian, we get to ponder upon the purpose of life, the meaning of faith, and the power of intellectual exploration. Rose Reid does a wonderful job of acting and expresses Caro's complex feelings associated with her inner conflict with delicacy. 

While the film may resonate with people from all walks of life, those with a strong interest in English literature and philosophy will find it particularly fascinating and rewarding.
