Unlike in many classic fairy tales, where dragons appear as dreadful, evil mythical creatures, dragons become the ones being hunted and threatened in Patrick Matthews' YA fantasy Bradley's Dragons. Learn more about this unique book and enter to win a fun prize pack!
My Review
Bradley's Dragons is a fast-paced, action-packed, well-written novel that keeps fascinating the reader from beginning to end. The story starts with a suspenseful encounter between Bradley and a mysterious man named Max trying in vain to abduct Bradley using magic. What's so special about Bradley? Why does Max want to take him away? How come Bradley has no memory of this incident afterwards? Why has he become so afraid of strangers? Why do Bradley's parents move to a trailer park in the swamp?
All these puzzling questions remain unanswered until three years later, when Bradley is about to turn 12 years old and when his family secret can no longer be concealed. As Bradley learns to come to terms with his new identity, a soon-to-hatch sky dragon, he is already thrown into a world with dangers lurking around. Will he win the race against the greedy and ruthless dragon hunters, including fairies that are indistinguishable from humans?
The story is full of surprising twists and turns, making it hard to predict what will happen next. The descriptions are vivid and engaging, while the characters are well developed with distinct personalities. I'm especially impressed with the thrilling battle between Bradley and Max. I feel so happy for Bradley when the love and support from his family help him overcome fear, discover his unique talent, and find his direction in life. This is an exciting story about courage, friendship, trust, and finding self-worth. Although written for young readers, the book can be entertaining and thought-provoking for the grow-ups too!
About the Book
