Whether as parents or educators, we often tell children to be kind. But what does kindness really mean? Is there a more intuitive way to teach young kids how to practice kindness in daily life? My Review:
The Kindness Machine is an engaging and empowering story that teaches about kindness in its broadest sense. By adopting the first person perspective, the book motivates young readers to join the second graders in Mr. Wilson's class in their classroom activities, from guessing what lies under the mysterious white sheet to figuring out how the fancy and miraculous Kindness Machine works. The colorful and cheerful illustrations, combined with the use of a myriad of shapes as buttons on the machine, help draw readers into the story and encourage them to participate in the discussion.
The Kindness Machine not only gives examples of kindly acts, but also demonstrates that the ways in which we show kindness may vary a great deal in form, difficulty and complexity. It can be as simple as a friendly smile or a nice compliment. One can get really creative about how to spread kindness. After experimenting and having fun with the machine, Mr. Wilson's students, together with readers of the story, come to the realization that being kind is a superpower that everyone possesses, and that it can be exercised on a daily basis to help bring happiness to others and themselves. With thought-provoking questions included before and during the course of the story, the book also suggests that being kind can help a person become more positive, confident and open-minded. All in all, this is a wonderful, educational book to read both at home and in a classroom setting.
About the Book:
Ages 4+ | 32 Pages
Publisher: Purple Butterfly Press | ISBN-13: 9781955119085
Creative and artistic 2nd-grade teacher, Mr. Wilson, wants to teach his students about kindness. Mr. Wilson creates The Kindness Machine, a special machine that shows the students exactly what they can do to bring kindness to their classroom and into their hearts! Instead of telling his students to “be kind,” which is something children hear from a very early age, they learn exactly what they can do in their own lives by pressing the special buttons. In the end, Mr. Wilson teaches his students that they each have their own Kindness Machine within them to help make kind decisions for others and themselves.
This creative, innovative, and fun teaching method will direct kids to be kind to one another in their classroom and beyond. The book includes discussion questions to help the reader consider not only kindness towards others but also kindness towards themselves, a lesson that is not always taught.
The Kindness Machine is a practical and innovative tool for teaching emotional literacy, kindness, and acceptance of self and others.
Available in hardcover, paperback, and as an ebook.
