My Review:

This Is Clare is a short and delightful book written by a professional English teacher for early English learners. The title character Clare is a cute, curious dog who loves to visit different places, meet new people, and engage in fun activities with her human friends. The author/narrator encourages young readers to observe Clare closely, as she strolls, plays and explores throughout the day. She gets naughty at times, but remains harmless and loveable. She resembles a small child in so many ways!

I am amazed by how well the author incorporates over a dozen words that rhyme with "Clare" to simple and expandable sentences while she keeps the story smooth and entertaining. For example, "This is Clare. Watch Clare dare. Watch Clare dare at the fair." This way, the book not only shows how the same pronunciation can come from both same and different spellings, but also how to make a description more informative by adding important details. It helps the reader learn about phonetics and build vocabulary through an easy-to-read and easy-to-remember story.

The colorful and visually pleasing illustrations make the book all the more enjoyable. Besides bringing the adorable characters to life, they also cleverly blend elements of Chinese culture in the background, such as dragon dance, incense sticks, red lanterns, and street vendors. Although not explicitly mentioned in the text, it doesn't take long to figure out the unique setting of this book from its pictures. Moreover, you can clearly feel the love and bond between Clare and Lindy from the ways they interact in the pictures. The book is sure to bring smiles to dog lovers.
