Doctor Marsha is a series created to entertain children at the preschool through grade school level relying on educational content. The main character, Marsha, will introduce kids to exciting challenges in basic health education as the series explores the world, vanquishing health problems. It is my hope that the characters will stimulate young minds by introducing them to a positive, professional figure that embodies the spirit of cultural competence, creativity, and adventure.
My Review:
Dr. Marsha and the Case of the Missing Hot Dogs and Marshmallows is the first book in the Doctor Marsh series featuring a smart, versatile kangaroo who is a doctor, a nutritionist, a pilot and a detective. One morning, Dr. Marsha receives a letter from her cousin, Milton Marsupial, mayor of Washington D.C., asking for her help to solve a mystery. All the hot dogs and marshmallows in the city are missing just a week before the Fourth of July celebration! Along with her friends Terrance Toad and Louie Llama, Dr. Marsha flies all the way from her home in Australia to the United States to lead the investigation. Soon after meeting with the brightest animals in DC and gathering clues from them, the team finds out who is responsible for the missing food items, but is faced with an even bigger challenge. Will they be able to come up with the perfect solution?
Weaving mystery, adventure and humor into one intriguing story, the book is sure to charm many curious young minds. As they travel and explore with Dr. Marsha, the readers get to know indigenous animals in different parts of the world, how they differ in their food preferences, the logical steps to conduct an investigation, a few famous landmarks in the U.S. capital, and most importantly, what constitutes a healthy lifestyle. They are encouraged to grow into observant, analytical, and creative problem solvers, and constructive team players.
The colorful, expressive illustrations contribute a great deal to the cuteness of the characters. My boys' favorite is the funny cane toad, who learns to enjoy healthy alternatives to his favorite junk food. The series is informative, educational, and entertaining. It would make a great gift for little animal and mystery lovers. My kids can hardly wait to read about the case to crack in the next book of the series.

About the Author:
Dr. Rachel Wellner is a board-certified general surgeon and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, most recently the Assistant Professor of surgery at the Monteflore-Einstein Center for Care. She has also been Director of Breast Services at NYEE/Continuum Cancer Center, Pascal Valley Hospital, and Palisades General Hospital. Dr. Wellner graduated Magna Cum Lauda and Phi Betta Kappa from Dartmouth College, earned her medical degree from the University of Connecticut and her Master's degree in Public Health from Columbia University. She pursued her surgical training at The Mount Sinai School of Medicine and worked to establish a clinical rotation in an underserved region of The Dominican Republic. She completed Society of Surgical Oncology-accredited breast oncology fellowship at the John Wayne Cancer Institute in Santa Monica, California. She has been featured as a guest expert on several local and national news networks, including WPLX 11, Fox and Friends, and CNN.
