My Review:

As the first book in the science fiction series, Eudora Space Kid: The Great Engine Room Takeover provides an entertaining introduction to the exotic world of Eudora, a curious and adventurous third grader with two alien parents who resemble the furry animals we are familiar with on Earth, one big sister who keeps a close eye on her at all times, and a cute pet drago (a mix between a bunny and a dragon) named Bologna. The family lives aboard the Astroliner Athena, the biggest ship of Astrofleet, which is the science and defense force of the Planetary Republic, an alliance composed of twenty planets in the galaxy, including Earth.

With a passion for science, engineering and experiments, Eudora frequently gets herself sent to the brig, Athena's onboard jail, for engaging in risky and reckless behaviors, such as blowing up an asteroid with plasma cannons, or deliberately dropping a pumpkin into the fusion chamber in the engine room. But nothing could stop her from pursuing her goal of becoming the ship's chief engineer. She comes up with a bold plan to get a fast track promotion. Will she be able to sneak inside the engine room and break space speed records by implementing her ingenious design?

Told from the point of view of Eudora, the story is lively, charming and hilarious. The smart yet naughty girl was brought to life by her funny thoughts and audacious actions. The humorous illustrations well complement the text and add to the fun of reading. You may have a good laugh over some intriguing details hidden in the book. Does a shoe store named Noo Joyzee or an ancient Earth mouse named Mookie ring a bell?

I love that the author lets Eudora learn through her mistakes. That's what it takes to grow up in the real world. Talented but inexperienced, Eudora needs to understand the importance of setting boundaries and taking responsibility. She also learns about the role honesty and respect could play in establishing trust and friendship. I haven't seen many science fictions written for middle graders. The Eudora Space Kid series makes a valuable addition to children's literature with well-illustrated chapter books that may spark young readers' interest in science and technology and inspire them to invent and innovate responsibly.

About the Book:

Ages 6-10 | 97 Pages
Publisher: David Horn | ISBN-13: 9781736677407

Eudora is a typical 3rd grader. A typical 3rd grader who lives on a 36 deck AstroLiner. In space. A normal girl adopted by what you might call… aliens. Her mom is a dog-like species named a Pox and runs the onboard jail (brig). Her dad is an octopus-like species from the planet Pow. She is a girl who has normal ambitions, like being the chief engineer on an AstroLiner.

Eudora is a girl who comes up with a plan to prove her worth by improving her AstroLiner’s engines and breaking all known speed records. Will she succeed and earn a promotion? Or will she end up in the brig? Again…

Brilliant for engaging emergent and early chapter book readers.

About the Author:

David Horn is a huge science fiction fan. While his wife sometimes feels like they live in outer space, they really live in New Jersey with their two human daughters and one doggy daughter named Trixie.

David loves reading science fiction books from both the old and new greats like Asimov, McDevitt, Scalzi, Howey, and more. He also loves reading his kids’ books like My Weird School, Just Grace, The Baby-Sitters Club, Ramona, and the list goes on.

David and his daughters also love watching sci-fi shows like Star Trek, Babylon 5, Stargate, and Star Wars.

Eudora Space Kid started as stories he told his daughters at dinner. They loved Eudora’s antics in space. So now The Great Engine Room Takeover is his first book in the Eudora Space Kid early reader chapter book series. He can’t wait for you to love Eudora’s stories too.
