The charming tale told in Amal the Thirsty Gamal is for every young person who might be anxious about how they are viewed by those around them (and yes, camels care about that too!). For so long, our blessing in disguiselittle hero has been hearing taunts and jeers and thinking negative things about himself, his looks, and especially his little hump. But—oh, brace yourselves! — because Wise Men are traveling with Amal’s special caravan, and when one of them speaks up around the campfire one night, everything changes for little Amal!

My Review:

With a clever spin on the Christmas story of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, this book follows Amal the Thirsty Gamal's unusual journey of self-discovery. Amal has become a laughing stock among his peers because he's got an exceptionally smaller hump than camels of his age. A small hump is believed to limit a camel's capacity for water storage, and furthermore, his ability to travel long distance in the desert. Amal is deeply convinced of this "fact" and constantly casts doubt on himself until one day, a wise man steps forward to debunk the myth with scientific evidence. People start to realize the advantage of Amal's special build and he ends up being the most famous camel of all.

With rhyming prose and playful illustrations, the story delivers inspiring messages about self empowerment and acceptance. It encourages youngsters to embrace their uniqueness and differences, which might turn out to be a blessing in disguise. It warns against letting your self-perception lean heavily upon the opinions of others, which could be terriably biased and unfounded. On the other hand, it shows how prejudice and misconception could hurt one's feelings and ruin their confidence. Therefore, we should treat everyone, including those who look different from ourselves, with respect, kindness, and understanding.
