My Review:
Moving is one of the life events that children may find hard to cope with because of the anxiety caused by separation from the familiar and fear of the unknown. Molly feels upset when she has to say bye to the backyard she loves to play in and her neighbor/best friend Becky she loves to play with. She doesn't even want to unpack the moving boxes in her new bedroom until a friendly, gentlemanly owl that Molly later nicknames Ollie presents himself on the windowsill. Ollie helps Molly get comfortable in the new environment by asking her to focus on all the things that haven't really changed since moving, such as her beloved animal friends, her clothes and her books and toys.
With colorful illustrations, lovable characters, and interesting conversations, the book mixes reality with fantasy to encourage young readers to acknowledge their mixed feelings about changes and to learn to deal with them wisely. It also reminds parents to be more conscious about the sadness, stress and confusion their children might experience when adjusting to a new neighborhood, new community, and new surroundings. While the story may appeal a great deal to children facing a move, it offers practical and valuable lessons for anyone who has to make a transition to something new and different.

The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day was inspired by Beale’s own experiences as a young child. Her father’s occupation required that her family move across the country every two years. Beale’s childhood was filled with adventures that captured her imagination in each new home. She continued her passion for adventure while raising her two daughters and working as a costume designer for local theaters. Now she is channeling her sense of fun and her youthful spirit into her children’s stories. Beale is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). The Adventures of Molly & Ollie: Moving Day, a Mom’s Choice Award winner, is the first book in the Molly & Ollie series.
