My Review
Saving Dr. Warren … A True Patriot is a touching and thought-provoking read for anyone interested in exploring the topic of patriotism. The prize-winning essay on patriotism of the super talented eighth grader Steve turns out to be a life-changing event that gives him the opportunity to travel back in history with the mysterious talisman, an old musket ball. During his unusal journey, Steve rediscovers the signifant contributions of a long forgotten hero Dr. Joseph Warren to the American Revolution. He also realizes the true meaning of being patriotic as he witnesses the tremendous sacrifices that ordinary men and women have made for the country during different phases of American history, including the Revolutionary War, World War II and the tragic terrorist attacks of September 11.
The book neatly combines elements of suspense, time-travel adventure and historical fiction, while having two storylines cleverly interwoven into one intriguing plot. With highly detailed, vivid recounts of historical events based on in-depth research, the story brings to life an impressive cast of relatable and compelling characters, as well as several defining moments in American History. I love that the author includes reference to real history in the footnotes, which can help young readers learn about historical facts and extend research if they want to. The story is sure to spark the reader's interest in history if he or she is not already a history lover to begin with.

Jeff Mckenna resides in a peaceful Southern Utah town amidst the red rocks that make up National Parks like Zion and Arches. He loves mountain biking over the brightly colored sandstone that surrounds him, as well as new trails he finds when he goes on cross-country RV trips with his wife. Along with reading entertaining historical fiction novels, Jeff believes a great way to learn to love America is by exploring her beautiful landscape and visiting cities and states from sea to shining sea.
