Monsterland Blog Tour: Review & Prize Pack Giveaway (41 Winners)

Halloween is right around the corner. Would you be up to the challenge to visit Monsterland, a theme park housing real vampires, werewolves and zombies? This brilliant idea of having various species of supernatural beings live in one place, a Disneyland for monsters, comes from award-winning author Michael Okon. His new book Monsterland is a must-read for paranormal fans and is the perfect book for teens and adults to pick up around Halloween.

I have to admit that neither paranormal fiction or horror story is among my favorite book genres, but Monsterland turned out to be a thrilling read for me. I'm most impressed with the vivid and detailed descriptions Michael provides throughout the book. Reading the story feels like watching the author paint a picture of the characters and scenes right in front of me. The story is fast-paced and action-packed, with a nice mix of suspense, horror, adventure and romance.

I'm happy to find that the book is more about the evolution of the teenage boy Wyatt entering adulthood than about monsters, which makes the story more realistic and relatable. Wyatt is a very likable character. On the one hand, he is shy, reserved, and an easy target for bullies at school, while on the other hand, he is kind, caring, compassionate, generous, loyal, smart, and brave when he needs to rise to the occasion. His visit to Monsterland simply served as a life-changing event that accelerated his growth toward maturity. The author also does a great job of addressing the subtle but improving relationship between Wyatt and his step father. Meanwhile, Michael cleverly weaves a lighthearted satire of lawyers and politicians.

Due to the large number of characters involved and the complexity of parallel plots, I did find the story hard to follow at times. I had to go back to previous chapters to search for details that I had overlooked during my first read. And there were some paranormal lingos that I needed to look up in order to understand things better. Nonetheless, I love Michael's writing style and look forward to reading more of his books.

About the Book:

Welcome to Monsterland — the scariest place on Earth.

Wyatt Baldwin’s senior year is not going well. His parents divorce, then his dad mysteriously dies. He’s not exactly comfortable with his new stepfather, Carter White, either. An ongoing debate with his best friends Melvin and Howard Drucker over which monster is superior has gotten stale. He’d much rather spend his days with beautiful and popular Jade. However, she’s dating the brash high-school quarterback Nolan, and Wyatt thinks he doesn’t stand a chance.

But everything changes when Wyatt and his friends are invited to attend the grand opening of Monsterland, a groundbreaking theme park where guests can interact with vampires in Vampire Village, be chased by werewolves on the River Run, and walk among the dead in Zombieville.

With real werewolves, vampires and zombies as the main attractions, what could possibly go wrong?
