Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump Blog Tour: Review & Prize Pack Giveaway

Does one of your fondest childhood memories involve a sleepover at your best friend's house? Was it easy for you to feel at home in a somewhat unfamiliar environment? Join Susannah as she takes on a new adventure - a sleepover at her bestie Lola's home - in Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump, the second book in award-winning author Carole P. Roman's latest middle grade series Oh Susannah. Her stay is no doubt unforgettable, but it can get spooky at times. A perfect read for Halloween!

Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump picked up right where we left off in book one Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag. You may recall that Lola's sleepover invitation is among the pile of troubles Susannah tried to stuff in her bag. Why? She can't help but feeling bothered by the squeaky sounds, lively spiders and mysterious ghosts that Lola's brother Kai keeps reminding her of. That all sounds too scary to poor Susie. But what scares her more is how she could possibly tell her mom or Lola about what she's afraid of, for fear that they may feel disappointed at her (not being brave enough or not being able to keep a promise).

As Susannah's mom suggests, people tend to be afraid of the unknown or the unexpected. For many of us, it takes tremendous courage to face our fears and even more of it to overcome those fears. Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump shows us how an eight-year-old girl struggles to admit her fears to her loved ones. I'm pleased to see that both Susannah and her mother are making conscious efforts to avoid repeating their mistakes made in Oh Susannah: It’s in the Bag. Her mom has clearly gotten more attentive to Susannah's subtle changes in behavior and emotion. My favorite part is when she reassures her daughter that she and dad will always be there for Susannah when she needs their help. No fear is impossible to conquer when you are surrounded by love!

In this story, Susannah also comes to the realization that people's fears may differ wildly. What one finds lovely may appear scary to someone else. It is important not to make fun of what others fear but try to understand them and respect their feelings instead. Had it not for Kai's practical jokes, Susannah's fear for darkness, spiders and ghosts wouldn't have escalated so rapidly.

Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump is a short and entertaining read teaching children about love, kindness, friendship, and overcoming fears and misunderstandings. Reading the story is like going on a roller coaster ride filled with ups and downs, twists and turns, and thrills and chills. A big surprise awaits both Susannah and the readers in the end. About the Book:

Oh Susannah: Things That Go Bump
Written by Carole P. Roman
Illustrated by Mateya Arkova

Susannah Maya Logan is not having a good day. She doesn’t want to go to her best friend, Lola’s sleepover. Susannah thinks the house is big and spooky, not to mention the ghost that is said to live there. Lola’s big brother, Kai, loves to tease Susannah with scary stories. Throughout her day, she sees people deal with things that scare them. Her sight-impaired friend, Macy, is terrified of unicorns, of all things. She sees a boy at a party who’s frightened of clowns. Her teacher is afraid of getting a cold. Susannah realizes everybody is scared of something. She wishes she was more like Lola, who is not afraid of anything, or so it seems. Susannah discovers people have different ideas of what is scary and what is not, and only they can determine the difference. Join Susannah as she learns to confront her fears and not let her imagination prevent her from having fun.

This sounds like a great book for my grandchildren. I have one grandson who is afraid of spiders, one that's afraid of the dark and one that is afraid of snakes. Maybe this book can help them overcome their fears a little. dwelchert at yahoo dot come

Answering in reverse: I only have one fear and that is of something happening to my kids.
Second answer (first question) my kids know I love to scare them (ironic, I know) and this would be a fun read for all of us.
