About Gianna the Great
Gianna just wants to know about her ancestors, but she has to join an after school history club (yuck!) to do it. Now, she's about to embark on a journey that will change everything she thinks she knows about her family.
My Review:
I was offered a copy of Gianna the Great for review. The story is told from the perspective of Gianna, a curious, funny girl, who appears to be a bit of an outlier at school, especially when compared to Matthew Jacobs, the straight A student from the Talented and Gifted class who happens to attend the same after-school history club as Gianna. It follows her as she explores the unknown facts of her family past with the help of Mr Williams, who encourages her to follow her interest in genealogy and shows her how to do research.
The book is written in a lighthearted, humorous tone, but it doesn't run short of emotional moments that demonstrate the strong bond between Gianna and her mom. Both my son and I enjoyed reading this book. I'd recommend it for independent middle-grade readers and younger kids who love to read with their parents. Giann's story doesn't seem to end with this book, though, as a large part of her family history remains somewhat suspenseful. I look forward to reading a sequel to this one!
