My Review:

Based on the true experience of the author's rescue dog named Ginger, Ginger's Courage tells an uplifting and healing tale about coping with trauma, living with disability, resilience, willpower, and friendship.

Ginger is a cheerful and zestful pup who loves to play football day and night, rain or shine. One day however, she chases her ball into traffic and gets hit by a car. The terrible accident takes away one of her legs, along with her smile and confidence. Will she be able to play football ever again?

Told through lyrical rhymes and evocative illustrations, the story realistically reflects the life-changing impact of a traumatic event resulting in a severe injury and even disability. As they follow Ginger's journey, young readers realize the physical and emotional challenges she has to struggle with, and learn from her to overcome a serious setback with courage, confidence, perseverance and positivity. Meanwhile, the constant encouragement Ginger receives from her friends suggests how we may support someone in a similar situation. While not a primary focus, Ginger's accident serves as a warning against playing in the street. Parents or educators may take the opportunity to stress safety during play.

Using warm, delightful colors reminiscent of colors of fall, the pictures in the book gently portray the ups and downs in Ginger's life with vibrant views of a coastal city in the background. They help readers relate to and empathize with the main character while corresponding closely to the story's theme about passion, persistence, acceptance, hope and optimism. The last page humorously features a variety of disabled but pleased dogs on Ginger's team, implying that nothing can stop you from doing what your truly love if you put your mind to it.

Beautifully written and illustrated, Ginger's Courage is a heartwarming read for dog lovers, sports lovers and children with disabilities. It may help parents to get their kids mentally prepared for whatever adversities that life might throw at them.
