My Review:
Infusing fiction with facts, The Constitution Kids is an enthralling and instructive time travel fantasy that brings the Constitution to life through an eye-opening adventure like no other.
A scary encounter with a protester waving a gun while claiming to exercise his Constitutional rights makes high school students Alex, Kali and Roman curious about what is actually written in the Constitution. They decide to do some research at the local library, where an ancient-looking book titled The Living Constitution presents itself off the shelf. Different historical figures emerge from the book to help teleport the trio to various places around the globe and moments in human history as they move from one section of the Constitution to the next, including all the amendments. Can they remain silent and invisible observers as the rules stipulate?
With a whimsical mix of magic, mystery, science fiction and historical fiction, this middle grade novel transforms the study of a difficult legal document into a captivating, fun-filled learning experience. Along with the relatable teenage characters, readers get to meet all kinds of impactful historical figures, from the Founding Fathers to Supreme Court justices, from scientists to social activists, and from outlaws to elected officials. Meanwhile, they learn about the historical events that help shape the contents of the Constitution and each amendment. The story keeps them guessing who the next guide will be and where the kids will be teleported.
The role of the guides goes beyond taking the youngsters to places though. More importantly, they help explain the underlying principles and primary purposes of each part of the document, making the language and concepts more comprehensible to young readers. Excerpts of the original text are provided at the beginning of each chapter for easy reference. Besides, for amendments concerning controversial issues, arguments from both sides are presented for readers to digest, assess, and achieve a more balanced view. Examples from countries other than the U.S. are also cited to create contrasts that lend support for the reasoning behind the Constitution.
Engaging and informative, The Constitution Kids is a must-read for those who wish to deepen their understanding of the Constitution while sharpening their critical thinking skills in a leisurely and enjoyable manner.
About the Book:
Ages: 8+ | 200 Pages
Publisher: Amplify Publishing (2025) | ISBN: 979-8891383906
Alex, Kali, and Roman are three fifteen-year-old friends who live in a small town. Alex is a great communicator, Roman is a bit of an inventor, and Kali is an intuitive empath. It’s summertime, and an adventure is triggered when they find themselves in the middle of a protest outside the local library by people who want to ban certain books. During the protest, people are focused on what they believe to be their Constitutional rights, causing the three teenagers to realize how little they know about the Constitution.
In their search for answers, they discover a book with magical properties, which becomes a catalyst in helping them discover what the Constitution is really all about.
Join the teenagers as this mysterious book enables them to travel through time and space—bringing to life historical figures like Ben Franklin, Wyatt Earp, Alice Paul, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, and many more. Each of these historical figures will teach them about the original Constitution and its amendments. Through the eyes of these three teenagers, you’ll be able to explore what it was like when the original Constitution was signed. You’ll even travel to other countries, like Russia, where you’ll meet Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in a field within the Gulag where he was imprisoned.
The Constitution, by itself, can be a difficult document to read, but The Constitution Kids will bring it to life with unusual experiences, humor, and fun, no matter your age.
