My Review:

Grady Whill and the Templeton Codex tells an engaging, imaginative and insightful story about self-discovery and self-enhancement. Although dismissing himself as an unqualified candidate, Grady Whill yearns to attend Templeton Academy, the world's most prestigious and highly selective school that supposedly trains talented kids to help bring out their innate superpowers. Despite the unexplained opposition from Uncle Leo, Grady miraculously gets into Templeton, along with his best friend Aarush, and his former friend now pesty bully Elwood. Once the initial excitement subsides however, Grady starts to question if this is what he really wants. Why is there so much secrecy surrounding the school? Is it possible to decipher the real meaning of the Codex? What superpower does he possess, if any at all?

The story is masterfully paced, with a nice balance between thrilling actions that keep the reader's attention and minute details that make the characters more relatable. By adopting a first person point of view, it holds the reader in suspense as the narrator (Grady) attempts to unravel the mystery. Meanwhile, the reader may feel more closely Grady's confusion, hesitation, and frustration before he finds his inner strength, and conquers his fear and self-doubt.

Drawing on her own experience and that of her children, the author develops a very special pair of characters, the asthmatic Grady and his autistic sidekick Aarush. both being easy targets of bullies. The story reflects the life challenges they face, the ridicule and alienation they encounter, and the impact of such experience on their self-image and social skills. As their circle of friends expands to include more kids with something special, it's inspiring to see that what others consider as a disability or disadvantage may turn out to be the very source of their heroic powers.

Grady is certainly a likeable leading character. With a kind heart, he stays loyal to friends, and gallantly stands up against bullies even when there is no prospect of winning. While witnessing Grady grow physically, psychologically and intellectually during his stay at Templeton, young readers may realize the significance of family, friends and teamwork, the potential of mindful and positive thinking, and the possibility of using willpower to overcome physical limitations.

With so many questions remaining unanswered toward the end, the book strongly calls for a sequel. It would be a very relevant read for those making the transition from middle school to high school. The intensified competition and increased workload all sound so real.

Templeton Academy, the superhero high school, is finally open!

The prestigious academy is recruiting the best of the best to enroll in its student body. The school is as mysterious as it is exclusive. Grady Whill thinks there is nothing special about him to make the grade. However, his best friend, Aarush Patel has been selected and thinks Grady has the right stuff. Even school bully, Elwood Bledsoe is attending.

If Grady is fortunate enough to be picked, his guardian has forbidden him to attend. Will a family secret prevent Grady from becoming the superhero he was destined to be?
