My Review:
Oi Gets Lost is a humorous, intriguing story of adventure and survival. The protagonist Oi is a bold, curious, adventurous kitten, who in many ways resembles an active child. Although being warned repeatedly by his mom about the danger of wandering on a busy street, he simply can't resist the urge to explore the world outside home, or the temptation of his favorite street food. Right after a narrow escape from an aggressive dog, Oi finds himself completely lost in a strange and somewhat intimidating new environment. Now nothing seems more important to Oi than getting back home and reuniting with his family. Will he succeed despite all the challenges and uncertainties lying ahead?
Cleverly paced, the story keeps the readers fully engaged as they follow Oi's observations, actions, thoughts and feelings. The world can be rather harsh from a kitten's perspective, from struggling to find food and shelter to strategizing to obtain protection from hostile humans. On the bright side, however, Oi grows so much smarter and more sophisticated than the average cat of his age, while he masters essential life skills such as catching rats on his own, jumping up high onto hard-to-reach places, making a new friend and securing his help, and hitchhiking in a discreet manner. My youngest was so absorbed into the story that he got truly concerned about Oi - what might happen to him next, how much he must have missed mommy, and how he could stay safe in a tricky situation. It made me laugh when he seriously objected to Oi's questionable conclusion that only female humans are likely to be kind to cats.
Perfect for readers who are ready to make the transition to early chapter books, this book turns out to be a rewarding read for the entire family. It not only delivers heartwarming messages about family, friendship, and sibling relationships, but also offers interesting implications for parenting. While making sure our kids feel loved and supported, we may need to give them the opportunity to face up to challenges, to make mistakes, and to grow and learn from failures, if we would like them to become more independent, resilient, adaptive and better at problem-solving.
