My Review:
Olive and the Valentine's Spell is a funny and imaginative rhyming picture book about a 6-year-old boy named Olive, who is about to celebrate his first Valentine's Day at school. Utterly confused about what a holiday for romantically involved grownups has to do with a child, Olive speculates that he would be forced to get married on Valentine's Day, something he's definitely not ready for. For fear of getting caught by the princess called Valentine, he hides under his bed weeping until mom comes to the rescue. However, when mom offers to help him fight off Valentine and stop the party of love from taking place, Olive is overwhelmed by a sad feeling at the mere thought of love disappearing completely from his life. Is that what he really wants?
While I don't think it common for a young child to associate Valentine's Day exclusively with romance, or to fear marriage as an end to fun and freedom, the story does have some nice implications about how parents could help their little ones overcome fear about something new and unfamiliar. I like how Olive's mom tries to understand his concerns, offers support for his ideas, and lets him take his time to figure things out on his own, instead of attempting to force the "correct" answer on him. More importantly, the book drives the message home that love is essential to our lives and can be found in so many things that we may take for granted on a daily basis. The brightly-colored, adorable illustrations add considerable visual appeal to this book. It's a fun read that encourages us to celebrate the magic of love with family and friends on Valentine's Day and beyond.
